Tuvix was the result of a transporter accident on the USS Voyager, combining Lieutenant Tuvok and Neelix in 2372.
Tuvix suggested that being deconstructed during beaming allowed the symbiogenesis enzymes of the plant to react to Neelix's and Tuvok's DNA in the matter stream, so only the single organism existed at the point of rematerialization.
Tuvix pleaded with the bridge crew to stop the Captain from "murdering" him, but eventually allowed the procedure to take place, saying that everyone would have to live with his death on their conscience, for which he was sorry, as they were all, in his eyes, good people, his friends.

Tuvix is an appealing character, and a clever combination of Tuvok and Neelix.
The major difference between these episodes and Tuvix, though, is that the characters desire to be returned to their original state, as indeed Tuvix does in the immediate aftermath of the accident.

Tuvix must subsequently face the possibility of his unique and permanent existence, realizing that the individuals Tuvok and Neelix may forever be lost.
This is a respectable feat on the part of director Cliff Bole; since the end of the show centers around the question of whether or not Tuvix has individual rights, it's important that the audience have sympathy for him.
Janeway's decision to force Tuvix to submit to a procedure that would kill him in order to save two crewmen is a powerful turn of events.

To have Tuvix alive is to have both Tuvok and Neelix alive in a matter, similiar to a Trill symbiont.
If Tuvix had agreed, willingly, to sacrifice his own life, then that is fair, but she had no right to force his death upon him.

Nov 23 2004, 08:22 PM In the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Tuvix", the characters of Tuvok and Neelix are combined in a transporter incident.
Tuvix was an exceedingly bad idea by a writer who had far too much to drink the night before he penned the episode.
Regardless of this, it does raise the question of whether Tuvix was a new individual with a right to live, or simply a combination of 2 other people who also have the right to continue living as individuals.

And whilst Janeway is wrong (yes, I said wrong) to say Tuvix had no right to approach Kes (I believe a being has every right when it comes to self-preservation) she gets to see how someone else is wrenched by her decision.
Tuvix knows Janeway is deciding his fate, and the Tuvok-within must know which decision she will make.
While Tuvix would be capable of escape by shuttle (Chakotay managed to steal one in "Manoeuvres") the two men in him must have realised, at their depth, how they must become two again for all to be right.

The plot turns on the question of whether to reverse the accident and restore the original crewmembers in the face of opposition by Tuvix himself, who explicitly claims a right to his own independent existence.
The overall moral view of Voyager is captured in the scene where Tuvix is hauled protesting from the bridge by force, to be effectively murdered in the name of the "greater good", while the other regular members of the cast refuse to look him in the eye.
But I think it might have been even worse if the crew did look Tuvix in the eye: the fact that they couldn't face him indicates that they knew they were doing wrong.

The set-up is that Tuvok and Neelix were on an away mission where they find an orchid that could be useful and when they beam back to "Voyager" what arrives is a creature that not only fuses the two crewmembers together but also includes all their memories and talents.
Tuvix quite naturally doesn't want to surrender to the procedure as it would effectively kill him...and this is the fundamental issue of the story.
Tuvix though possesses the same romantic feelings that Neelix had for Kess, and he attempts to both console and propose a romance with her.

There was the initial shock and curiosity regarding Tuvix's existence, and the slow discovery by the crew (and viewers) of just how different and yet similar Tuvix was.
I like Tuvok quite a bit, so I'm not at all certain that I liked Tuvix better than both of the characters he replaced; but he was certainly extremely interesting, and was both fairly well- written and quite well-played in order to bring that about.
Some of the dialogue was handled just beautifully (Tuvix's reasoned "are you suggesting that this is *your* decision to make?", for instance), and Tuvix's ill-considered choice to ask Kes to help him influence Janeway felt like exactly the sort of wrong choice he should have made.

After an initial period of adjusting to having two distinct backgrounds in his head, Tuvix begins to fit in with the crew.
I actually liked Tuvix better than I ever liked either of the indivual characters - Tim Wright's performance was stellar, a brilliant blending of both characters' most recognizable traits.
But that's a nit in what could have been a brilliant opportunity to discuss the ethics of cloning, abortion (since Tuvix was in effect the "child" of Neelix and Tuvok who had to die to save the parents' lives), and capital punishment.

After all, Tuvix has to be seen as a totally unique conscious entity, and to rob him of his life, regardless as to what end, still constitutes murder.
Any logical thought process is utterly undermined by the enormity and complexity of the ethical question at hand - not to mention the emotion and sentiment that plays a significant role - in regards to the fate of Tuvok and Neelix.
And taking that into account, to do Tuvix harm, and take his life against his will is wrong.
