Tuzla still in the news, as Ukraine announces it will dig a channel (12/14/03)
KYIV - Ukraine announced on December 8 that it would dig a channel in the Kerch Strait near the island of Tuzla, the sliver of Ukrainian territory that received international attention recently after Russia began construction of a dike in September to link it to its land.
The new channel would be designated for shallow-hulled vessels and would be part of a project that had already been in development, which the transport minister said met all international norms and regulations.
No less important is the fact that the new channel would effectively create a divide between the island and the dike that Russia constructed in September and October, which today reaches to less than 100 meters from the island's shore.

Russian-Ukrainian dispute over Tuzla escalates (10/26/03)
Twenty-six days after Russian construction vehicles began an unannounced construction project to build a dike into the Kerch Strait in the direction of Tuzla Island, a five-mile strip of land sparsely populated mostly with pensioners and vacationers, the area had become the central focus of an international dispute bordering on armed conflict.
While Russia has yet to clearly outline the basis for its demand that Ukraine prove it has the right to Tuzla, experts believe it lies in the fact that until 1925 the island was part of Russia's Taman Peninsula and connected to the mainland via a land abutment called a spit.
Some Russian politicians have openly stated that the construction is intended to rebuild the spit and reconnect Tuzla to the Taman Peninsula to reassert Russia's historical claim to the region.
