Following World War II this air force was involved in air defense and reserve training and concentrated entirely upon air defense in the latter 1960s and again after 1985.
Neither the Air Field Forces nor the Air Force, Alaskan Defense Command, were legitimate War Department establishments and must be classified in the same category as provisional units, although the term "provisional" was never used in connection with them.
The new air force drew its operational forces from existing air forces in the European and Mediterranean theaters and commenced combat operations the day after it was formed.

The 8th Air Force patch is an embroidered circular patch approximately 2 1/2 inches in diameter, featuring the featuring the WWII Air Force Star (a white star with red disc in the center) in the lower loop of a winged numeral 8 on an ultramarine blue background.
The 15th Air Force patch consists of a blue disc and a white star charged with a red disc in the center and with golden orange stylized wings below a golden orange Arabic numeral "I5", all within a golden orange amulet.
Constituted as the Fifteenth Air Force on 30 Oct 1943, and activated in the Mediterranean theater on 1 Nov 1943, the 15th began operations on 2 Nov 1943 and engaged primarily in strategic bombardment of targets in Italy, France, Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, and the Balkans until the end of the war.

General John C. Meyer is the commander in chief of the Strategic Air Command and director of the Joint Strategic Target Planning Staff at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb. SAC is the nation's major nuclear deterrent force with bombers, tankers and reconnaissance aircraft and intercontinental ballistic missiles.
After a tour of duty as Director of Operations for Air Defense Command and Continental Air Defense Command, General Meyer graduated from the Air War College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., in June 1956, and was retained as an instructor at the college.
Twelfth Air Force provided tactical air units for joint logistic and close air support training with Army ground units stationed in the western half of the United States.

HQ Twelfth Air Force announces that the Moroccan, West Algerian and Central Algerian Composite Wings (Provisional) are to be replaced by the 2d, 1st and 3d Air Defense Wings, respectively, when they arrive in the theater.

TACTICAL OPERATIONS (Twelfth Air Force): In Italy, weather grounds medium bombers and restricts fighters to reconnaissance and patrols; during the night of 1/2 Oct A-20s bomb targets of opportunity in the Po Valley; HQ 27th Fighter Group and the 522d, 523d and 524th Fighter Squadrons move from Loyettes, France to Tarquinia with P-47s.
TACTICAL OPERATIONS (Twelfth Air Force): In Italy, operations are again curtailed by bad weather; however, fighters and fighter-bombers successfully attack bridges, rail lines, roads, vehicles, and trains in the C Po Valley and hit scattered targets elsewhere in N Italy; the 525th Fighter Squadron, 86th Fighter Group, moves from Grosseto to Pisa with P-47s.
TACTICAL OPERATIONS (Twelfth Air Force): In Italy, bad weather hampers medium bombers operations in the Po Valley as 7 of 9 missions abort; in the 2 others, bridges in the Valley are hit; fighters and fighter-bombers fly less than 100 sorties, but successfully strike road and railroad bridges in the Bologna-Modena areas.

Headquarters Twelfth Air Force is located at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz. It is responsible for the combat readiness of eight active-duty wings in the western United States and Panama, with more than 35,000 personnel and 450 aircraft.
In addition, Twelfth Air Force is responsible for 21 gained units of the Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard, with an additional 21,000 people and 360 aircraft.
