An Israelite is a member of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, descended from the twelve sons of the Biblical patriarch Jacob who was renamed Israel by God in the book of Genesis, 32:28.

Judah and the tribe of Benjamin were the only tribes that remained loyal to Solomon's son Rehoboam, and these two tribes of the southern area became known as the kingdom of Judah (because Judah was the principle tribe).

The Twelve Tribes of Israel Today
The “Lost Tribes of Israel” are lost not because they represent people not found among the almost seven billion known inhabitants of the planet, but because their ancestors fell into apostasy and their identity was lost.
The scriptures teach that the “lost tribes” are “scattered upon all the face of the earth” (not inside or under the earth, but on its face) and also “among all nations,” while the relative concentrations may vary.
The promises of the Lord to gather the tribes of Israel (spiritually and physically) are equally evident.

History Research Projects: Book: "The 'Lost" Ten Tribes of Israel...Found!"
After the time of Christ, the Jewish historian, Josephus, wrote that the ten tribes of Israel had become extremely numerous and he even revealed one of their national borders.
Because the Bible states the ten tribes of Israel will be prominent and identifiable in the latter days, those Christians who say the ten tribes of Israel disappeared or "died out" are unwittingly at odds with the Bible.
After the division of the Hebrew tribes, it was virtually impossible to distinguish between the ten tribes and the "Phoenician" city-states as the ten tribes drifted away from Judah and became closely integrated with Tyre and Sidon.

 The Lost Tribes of Israel
From that time on, the tribes were divided into two nations, which came to be called the House of Israel (the Northern ten tribes) and the House of Judah (the Southern two tribes).
When the House of Israel was conquered, most people belonging to the ten Northern tribes were deported and settled elsewhere in the Assyrian kingdom, including places near Nineveh, Haran, and on what is now the Iran-Iraq border.
The term appears late in Israel’s history—after the division into northern and southern kingdoms—and it can be fairly claimed that the term does not apply to the members of the ten northern tribes, who are properly known as "Israelites" since they belonged to the House of Israel rather than the House of Judah.

Therefore, in order to be able to make any sense out of the many prophecies about what will happen to national Israel just before Christ's return, it is necessary to have some understanding of who and where the tribes of Israel are today.
Because the information is available to anyone who wants to determine who and where the contemporary Israelites are today, we will only present a list of the major countries that represent the majority of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, in order to make the meaning of end time prophecies more clear.
This information is based on historical and linguistic evidence; however, not all of the Twelve Tribes can be identified with absolute certainty.
