The Twelve Steps of DRA encourage members to develop and follow a healthy and constructive plan to manage their emotional or psychiatric illnesses.
Though the original Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous may be couched in terms that sound dated to some and overtly religious to others, the underlying principles of personal growth and healing have proved to transcend all such boundaries for those who are willing.

Twelve-step program - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Twelve Steps were originally written by Wilson and other early members of AA to codify the process that they felt had worked for them personally.
The Twelve Steps were essentially a rewriting of the 6 steps of the Oxford Group (founded by Frank Buchman) with whom Wilson had contact.
The Twelve Steps were eventually matched with Twelve Traditions, a set of guidelines for running individual groups and a sort of constitution for the fellowship (i.e., A.A.) as a whole.

Like all the remaining Steps, Step Three calls for affirmative action, for it is only by action that we can cut away the self-will which has always blocked the entry of God--or, if you like, a Higher Power--into our lives.

This vital Step was also the means by which we began to get the feeling that we could be forgiven, no matter what we had thought or done.

Of interest is that there is no reference in the book Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, written in 1952, to the “three column inventory” described on page 65 of the “Big Book,” which was written in 1939.
The Fourth Step, as written in the “Twelve and Twelve,” consists of an Assets and Liabilities Checklist, along with some questions.
The reason there is no mention of a three or four column inventory in the “Twelve and Twelve” is because the book is a reflection of what was actually being done at the time.
