Twice Removed - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Twice Removed was the second album by Canadian rock band Sloan.
It was released on Geffen Records in 1994, and is considered to be one of their best albums.
It was more melodic and catchy than their previous album, Smeared, and as a result Geffen did not promote it very well because it didn't fit the commercially dominant grunge rock style of the time.

It was more melodic and catchy than their previous album, Smeared, and as a result Geffen did not promote it very well; Sloan was turning away from the grunge-rock style of other Geffen acts, and they were dropped from the label after Twice Removed was released.
Twice removed means that there is a two-generation difference.
You are two generations younger than a first cousin of your grandmother, so you and your grandmother's first cousin are first cousins, twice removed.

First cousins once removed are very often also simply referred to (though incorrectly) as second cousins.
But Beatrice and Andrew are themselves two generations removed from each other, thus Andrew and Beatrice, in this example, are "third cousins twice removed".
In the example provided at the right, generations one (child) through ten (8th Great Grandchild) from the Common Progenitor are provided, however the format of the chart can easily be expanded to accommodate any number of generations needed to resolve the question of relationship.

It helps sort the relationships which usually are referred to as "first cousin once removed, twice removed," etc. It also will aid in deciphering all of those "great," "great-great," and even more "great" relationships, which often prove so confusing.
You would not be a cousin "removed" from your first cousins, because they are in the same generation as you are -- two generations younger than your grandparents.
Just to confuse matters, a first cousin once removed is a term that could describe either the child of your first cousin (in the descendancy) or the child of your great-aunt (in the ascendancy).

We don't tend to speak about our relationships in such exact terms ("cousin" seems good enough when you are introducing one person to another), so most of us aren't familiar with what these words mean.
Removed When the word "removed" is used to describe a relationship, it indicates that the two people are from different generations.
You and your first cousins are in the same generation (two generations younger than your grandparents), so the word "removed" is not used to describe your relationship.

The result was Twice Removed, an album that reflected both Sloan's ultra-democratic, four songwriter-singer approach to making records (indeed, it sounds like a compilation album more than one made by a cohesive, one-headed pop group) and the band's waning interest in shouldering the grunge mantle.
It was Twice Removed that was voted by Canadian critics "The Best Canadian Album Ever" (an honor the band is not willing to accept, by the way).
It was around the time of Twice Removed that Sassy magazine gave Sloan the thumbs-up with their "Cute Band Alert." It was also Twice Removed that left Sloan's marketing handlers at Geffen scratching their heads.

Sloan*s Twice Removed Named Top Canadian Album Of All Time
Twice Removed made it to the #1 spot on our Top 50 back in 1996, but with the album being only two years old, naysayers griped that it wouldn't have any staying power.
The criticisms proved to be at least slightly true in 2000 when Twice Removed fell to #3 on the second run of the poll (we run the thing every four or five years, like the Olympics), but now, more than a decade after it's initial release, Twice Removed is back at the top.
Following on that modesty tip, most of the band think that Twice Removed's status in the Canadian canon has as much to do with the myth surrounding the album as it does with the record's content.

Twice Removed: The Baffling Phenomenon of the Translated and then Re-Translated Text - the complete review Quarterly
A final possibility for the bizarre choice of translating a text already once removed from the original comes in the form of what it is a publisher wants to present: perhaps it really is not the original that the publisher hopes to bring to an English-speaking audience, but rather the translation -- i.e.
(Murakami is, after all, the rare contemporary author who has managed to get one of his novels (Norwegian Wood) translated (directly) into English twice over.) Murakami might actually have enough clout so that he could influence a publisher (by insisting on it in the contract) that translations be directly from the original.
Less well-known authors (or dead ones, like Márai, the handling of whose work is now in the hands of some literary executor) are likely unable to resist the huge temptation of getting into a major market like the English-language one, whatever the compromises.

Robin Trower : Twice Removed from Yesterday - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
After leaving his old group, Trower experimented with different musicians and ideas for several years, which paid off when he finally released Twice Removed From Yesterday, a record that displayed the characteristics that would make him a guitar hero and stadium attraction of the mid-'70s.
The most intriguing tune on the album is the title track, a nugget of '70s-style psychedelic rock that showed Trower to be a pretty good songwriter.
The best aspects of Twice Removed would come to full flowering on his next album, Bridge of Sighs, but this debut showed Trower to be an effective interpreter of the Hendrix sound, and not just what numerous others who came in his wake would prove to be: mere imitators.
