I had just seen the movie several weeks earlier, having finally bought the DVD after reading so much about it for the past year or so and how it was cleaning up at festivals around the world.
Having now seen the movie 3 times (and I'll probably be going on viewing #4 here shortly), I personally consider it an instant classic, and I find it easy to foresee it joining the ranks of such genre classics as Yojimbo, Harakiri, and Zatoichi.
The movie's final scenes are a fitting end, as we watch the now-grown Ito (who serves as the film's narrator) memorialize her father.

calendarlive.com: MOVIE REVIEW - 'Twilight Samurai'
Much of the slow-building pleasure of "The Twilight Samurai" comes from discovering just how far from that ideal Seibei actually is. One evening, after coming to the defense of a friend, the samurai finds himself forced to fight a duel with a higher-ranking warrior.
A commercial success in Japan on its release in 2002, "The Twilight Samurai" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film this year, making it the first live-action Japanese feature to be nominated in more than two decades.
Although these nominations generally attest to the willfully pedestrian taste of the academy's nominators — "The Twilight Samurai" is far from an aesthetic triumph, much less the best non-animated Japanese feature in 20 years — the film creeps into your affections with admirable stealth.

 Cranky Critic® Movie Reviews: Twilight
Such is the case in Twilight, a movie that will bore non- grownups to death.
For the rest of us, Twilight is a detective story with characters more human than action figure and with enough bullets flying and characters dropping dead to keep us happy until the closing credits.
It delivers fine, subtle performances by Newman as the dick who thinks first and shoots only when he has to; Sarandon as the wife who thinks only of her husband; and Hackman as the surly producer who's bought his way out of every other problem he's faced.

SARUDAMA.COM: Japanese Movie Reviews: Twilight Samurai - Tasogare Seibei (Yamada Yoji 2002)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
To his co-workers, Iguchi Seibei is known as "Twilight Seibei" due to his enduring habit of returning home before the sun sets despite repeated invitations by his comrades to go out for an evening and enjoy himself.
Thus, when an opportunity arises wherein he is able to, perhaps, exploit the dangerous skills of his youth and thereby gain enough financially to secure the future of his children, he takes it, with consequences he did not foresee.
Twilight Samurai unfortunately avoids any hint of complexity by suggesting that, in the end, Seibei's ability to wed Tomoe not only rights all wrongs, but also eradicates all deeper complexities.

"Twilight Samurai," a powerful drama nominated for the Academy Award for for Best Foreign Language Film this past year, is such a film.
Narrated by Ito, Seibei's five-year-old daughter, "Twilight Samurai" depicts the unraveling of a society built on tradition and honor through a pair of innocent eyes.
In a time and place in movie history where filmmakers rely on shooting first and thinking about the effects of their work later, "Twilight Samurai" needs to be embraced for its mastery of fascinating storytelling.

 MMI Movie Review: Twilight
Narrated by ex-cop and retired private eye, Harry Ross (played by Newman), "Twilight" is a tale of murder and mystery in Los Angeles and the fickle strengths of friendship and love.
In one memorable scene, Harry and Raymond reminisce over their wilder days in L.A. and then, in the next breath, Raymond asks, "Is your prostate bothering you?" Hilarious but poignant because after all these years, the two old friends are heading in opposite directions and only one will survive.
"Twilight" is one of those films where everybody involved seems to have actually cared, thus we have a superb product with memorable characters brought to life by some of the finest actors of our time.

It has a target audience of people who were in the prime of their life the last time Paul Newman was in a feature film and it opens on a very crowded weekend with three other, more popular releases (by "popular" I mean a wider target audience).
Although the plot isn't too confusing, it is a prerequisite that the viewer follows along throughout the entire movie: characters' names are important and connections are immediately lost if a role is regarded as unimportant.
At the time of the movie, which takes place in the Hollywood area, Jack Ames is at the beck and call of a flmailer (Liev Schrieber) who has information about the death of another actor.

The opening bit with Albert Brooks and Dan Aykroyd, while not at all in keeping with the tone of the TV show, is for my money the best bit in the entire film.
The last segment, George Romero's, is easily the best, and much darker and improved from the rather cheesy TV episode that featured William Shatner and a midget in a white, furry, pig-nosed costume rather than Lithgow's method appraoch to the terror and a well-realized demonic beast on the wing.
The little CODA at the end is satisfying enough, but despite the last quarter of the movie working very well, the overall experience is much less than the sum of its parts.

Paramount Pictures' "TWILIGHT," starring Paul Newman, Susan Sarandon, Gene Hackman, Stockard Channing, Reese Witherspoon, Giancarlo Esposito and James Garner, paints a portrait of present-day Los Angeles infused with flmail, murder, sexuality, moral excess and the memorable characters that cloud its landscape.
Aging stars Paul Newman, Susan Sarandon, Gene Hackman, and James Garner all deliver worthy performances but only represent how outdated this story is. As directed and co-written by veteran Benton, Twilight sometimes lacks the tension or energy of a good thriller, but its reflective mood and poignancy more than compensate.
If examined solely as a detective story, Twilight's plot is lackluster and predictable; it needs a few more supporting characters to be suspects.
But the true mystery in Twilight is the degree to which seduction and passion continue to endure.
