Although the Oregon Trail passed through the region and a rail station was established in 1864 at Rock Creek near the present-day townsite, the Twin Falls area remained very sparsely populated throughout the 19th Century until advances in irrigation techniques made commercial agriculture in the area practical.

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (AP) -- Declining aquifer water levels in southern Idaho mean Twin Falls will run out of drinking water in five years unless new supplies are secured, a study has found.
Boise-based J-U-B Engineers released a study this week that found Twin Falls' wells will decline in production because of drought and other adverse effects on the aquifer, a pattern that has already been observed.
Twin Falls has four production wells on the north side of the Snake River.
