Famicom Disk System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was a unit that sat underneath the Famicom and used proprietary floppy disks for data storage.
The device was connected to the Famicom deck by plugging a modified cartridge known as the RAM Adapter into the system's cartridge port, which attached via a supplied cable to the disk drive.
The Famicom Disk System was capable of running on six C-cell batteries or the supplied AC adapter, even though the Famicom itself was not portable.

 Nintendo Entertainment System - Wikipedia
A Nintendo Family Computer (Famicom) non tivo moito éxito nun primeiro momento: Durante o seu primeiro ano, foi amplamente criticada alegando que a consola era pouco fiable e moi propensa aos erros de programación e constantes colgues.
Although most hardware clones were not produced under license by Nintendo, one exception is the Twin Famicom, produced by Sharp Corporation.
The Twin Famicom was compatible with both Famicom cartridges and Famicom Disk System disks.

It was basically a combination Famicom and Disk System in one pink-colored, 70's looking unit (Sharp also released a fl version of the system, for those looking for something more manly).
The Twin Famicom has both a cart port on the top (60 pins) and a disk slot on the front of the console, plus a little switch to go between disk and cart mode.
Like the Famicom, this system came with two hard-wired controllers, but it also came with a white and grey light gun complete with a little, retractable, too-small-to-be-useable gunsight.

Famicom Disk System or FDS for short was an addon for the Famicom and was launched in 1986.
Without piracy the Famicom Disk System could still only go so far, the disks were pretty limiting with only 64k of space on each side of the disc, swapping and switching disks can get very annoying.

In the 80's when Nintendo was king of the hill a disk drive system was released for the Famicom.
Sad thing about all this is that many of the disks now are hitting the magic 20 year mark where the data starts to fade, so the pirate cartridge versions of many disk games that weren't officially released on carts may be the only versions left in a few years.
Anyway this is actually a licensed clone made by Sharp which combined the disk drive add on with the normal Famicom into one machine.

You'll either need a real Japanese Famicom to use it, or mod the hell out of your existing NES (probably more trouble than it's worth) to even use the thing, and even then you'll likely have a hard time finding games.

This is an unusual event in the history of consoles and indeed the only previous instance in which Nintendo licensed its hardware to a third party manufacturer was back in 1988 with the production of the Sharp Famicom Twin.
The relative lack of commercial success of the Sharp Famicom however, was a possible contributing factor to Nintendo’s decision to break from its agreement with Sony to produce a CD-based Snes system.
The GCQ will also replicate the low sales of the Sharp Famicom, though this will be out of choice as Matsushita are choosing to limit productions of the console to make the Q one of the more exclusive consoles available.
