 Richard Proenneke - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the summer of 1967, Proenneke was dropped off at Twin Lakes for the season so he could fell timber, fl spruce logs required for the building of his dream retirement home.
Before arriving at the lakes, he made arrangements to use a cabin on the upper lake of Twin Lakes owned by a retired Navy captain Spike Carrithers and his wife Hope from Kodiak, (in whose care he had left his camper).
He also built furniture including chairs, tables, a desk, and a bunk; a log cache built up on poles to store food and goods that needed to be kept away from wildlife; a stone and mortar fireplace; and many decorations such as a plaster of paris wolf track and moose and caribou antler decorations.

The switchbacks along the last mile are punishing, but the view of the falls draining from the Twin Lakes is worth it.

When you get to Twin Lakes, well you could spend weeks exploring the mountains around the lakes.
One idea I've had is finding a place to put in at the headwaters and then hike down the drainage to Twin Lakes then do some more exploring there.
These were taken in the Twin Lakes area.

Well, in Lake Clark NP, the only wildlife I saw in more than a week was a grizzly bear which was the size of a dot in binoculars and ran away as soon as it became aware of our group.
Between Twin and Turquoise lake, there is a mineral lick which supposedly attracts many Dall sheep, but being primarily a landscape photographer with a 5x7 camera, and having seen enough Dall sheep in Denali, I didn't try to get there myself.
In case anyone is interested, the herd was at Twin Lakes around the 20th of June.

In 1968 at the age of 51 Richard (Dick) Proenneke constructed a log cabin at Upper Twin Lakes and lived there alone for almost 30 years.
Entries included dates of lake freeze-up; lake ice break-up; den entry and den emergence by brown bears; first calving by moose; first lambing by Dall sheep; and nest initiation by Gray Jays.
Trends in the duration of lake ice cover on Upper Twin Lake plotted from Dick’s records (1969-95) parallel those of other Northern Hemisphere sites and provide evidence that freshwater ecosystems are responding to a warming climate.
