Hank Ballard wrote the original song to the twist in 1955 when he "saw" teenagers doing the dance (published it in 1958.) Kal Mann of Parkway records saw the teenagers on American Bandstand dancing to Hank Ballard’s record, “The Twist,” and hired Chubby Checker to performed it on Clay Cole’s TV show in 1959.
Unfortunately, the twist was also associated to racism, payola, copyright infringement and the Mafia.
The Bossa Nova was the new dance that was to replace the Twist...

The dance was first popularized by Chubby Checker in 1960 with a hit cover of the 1959 B-side and minor hit "The Twist" written by Hank Ballard.

A song called "Pony Time" was written in 1960 by Don Covay and John Berry and was released on the tiny Arnold label by a group called "The Goodtimers".
In the fall of 1961, record industry history was made, when Checker's original hit record, "The Twist", re-entered the charts and by January of 1962, it was back in the number one position.
His success continued for years with the release of one dance record after another, with, "The Fly" and "Let's Twist Again", for which he won a Grammy for the "Best Rock Performance".
