Ending with a Twist - Absolute Write Water Cooler
The ending has to be true to the story and characters, and it has to resolve the central theme/issue and tie the loose ends to satisfy your readers.

Yet, the unexpected twist at the end throws it all out, abandoning pretty much everything for the sole purpose of the shock value of the surprise.
When we are presented with the surprise ending that, yes, makes perfectly logical sense, and it does satisfy the "search" for the killer's true identity, the discerning viewer may notice that the film never addressed the main character's objective.
When the ending is presented, we see that the surprise is a logically viable solution, but it dropped the objectives on the floor.

At the same time, there are numerous novels in the genre (and outside of it) where knowing the details of similar “surprise” endings from previous readings in no way detracts from the “shock and awe” occasioned by each subsequent re-reading.
Some endings may in fact be inevitable, almost preordained, and yet they nevertheless retain their shock value.
When all is said and done, however, the answer as to why we are continually fascinated by some stories – and shocked/surprised by some endings regardless of the fact that we know about them in advance– may simply be the result of a particular artist’s skill.

A Twist Ending that serves no purpose other than to be excessively cruel.
The Outer Limits Twist is basically the evil cousin of the Twilight Zone Twist: in the latter, the twist is a form of divine justice, a bad thing happening to stop a bad person from Getting Away With It.
It's the same twist in both episodes, but in one, the man is a general misanthrope who wills everyone else away, making his eventual fate karmic justice and a Twilight Zone Twist.
