What is twisted pair? - a definition from Whatis.com
This is known as shielded twisted pair (STP).
Twisted pair is now frequently installed with two pairs to the home, with the extra pair making it possible for you to add another line (perhaps for modem use) when you need it.
Although twisted pair is often associated with home use, a higher grade of twisted pair is often used for horizontal wiring in LAN installations because it is less expensive than coaxial cable.

NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Twisted pair   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Twisted pair cabling is a form of wiring in which two conductors are wound together for the purposes of canceling out electromagnetic interference (EMI) from external sources and crosstalk from neighboring wires.
Twisted pair cabling is often used in data networks for short and medium length connections because of its relatively lower costs compared to fiber and coaxial cabling.
Twisted pair’s susceptibility to the electromagnetic interference greatly depends on the pair twisting schemes (usually patented by the manufacturers) to stay intact during the installation.

 Twisted Pair Cabling Houston
Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) has been designed for use in voice applications and local area networks.
Over 99% of our copper installations are UTP versus shielded twisted pair (STP), which is rarely used.
STP: (Shielded Twisted Pair) A shielded cable is an electrical cable of one or more insulated conductors enclosed by a shield that may be composed of braided strands of copper.

What is Unshielded Twisted Pair? - a definition from Whatis.com - see also: UTP
Twisted pair is the ordinary copper wire that connects home and many business computers to the telephone company.
Twisted pair comes with each pair uniquely color coded when it is packaged in multiple pairs.
Although twisted pair is often associated with home use, a higher grade of twisted pair is often used for horizontal wiring in LAN installations because it is less expensive than coaxial cable.

Linux Ethernet-Howto: Cables, Coax, Twisted Pair
The second drawback is that if you have a big loop of machines connected together, and some bonehead breaks the loop by taking one cable off the side of his tee, the whole network goes down because it sees an infinite impedance (open circuit) instead of the required 50 ohm termination.
Twisted pair networks require active hubs, which start around $50, and the raw cable cost can actually be higher than thinnet.
Differential signal pairs must be on the same twisted pair to get the required minimal impedance/loss of a UTP cable.

The characteristics of the twisted pair cables are significant, since they arguably constitute the greatest asset of an established telecommunications carrier.
Twisted pair underground cables are perfectly adequate for reliable voice communications, provided they are protected from damage by excavation and ingress of water.
Ideally, every analogue telephone would have its own twisted pair copper cable to either the exchange or to a Remote Access Unit, which is linked by fiber to the exchange which may be hundreds of kilometers distant.

 Twisted Pair Testing
In this case, all points that must be tested for twisted pairs must be connected through coax cable and the shields of all the coax wires must be connected together and grounded to the tester chassis.
In poor-quality twisted pair cabling each pair is not shielded, the wires have less than 2 twists per inch and there is a general twisting lay to the bundle every foot or so for the length of the cable.
By using a couple of feet of high quality twisted pair cabling matching the twist pattern of the cable to be tested you can increase the length of the whole assembly being tested thus allowing the tester to get a "better read" on the cable.

Smart Computing Encyclopedia Entry - twisted pair   (Site not responding. Last check: )
A type of wire in which two strands of insulated copper wire are twisted about each other in order to cut down interference from other wires within the cable.
Although many grades of twisted pair wire are available, there are only two basic types: UTP (unshielded twisted-pair) and STP (shielded twisted-pair).
The difference is that STP uses an RF-insulating shield around the four wire pairs to decrease further susceptibility to electromagnetic interference.

 Twisted pair (Floyd Davidson)
Twisted pair transmission lines provide noise immunity compared to a non-twisted pair (generally in excess of 60 dB of immunity, which is a _huge_ amount).
The two twisted wires are coupled more tightly >>than two wires in a non-twisted cable (which would also tend >>to use thicker insulation specifically to separate the >>conductors farther, as opposed to twisted pairs where closer >>proximity is made up for by noise immunity due to common mode >>rejection provided by balanced circuits).
Twisted pair cable, to counter the physical bulk increase caused by the twist, will use thinner insulation, which is effective because common mode rejection is the primary noise reduction mechanism for balanced circuits and the capacitance between conductors does not cause the significant increase in noise which would be seen with a non-balanced circuit.

 Twisted pair cables ...
Characteristic impedance of twisted pair is determined by the size and spacing of the conductors and the type of dielectric used between them.
When many twisted pairs are put together to form a multi-pair calbe, individual conductors are twisted into pairs with varying twists to minimize crosstalk.
For example, one conductor in pair 3 is connected to pin 1 on one side and to pin 2 on the other, while the second conductor is connected between pin 2 and pin 1.
