The date was 2 May 1970 and they were starting the first Two Oceans ultramarathon, a race which over the past three decades has grown to the second largest in South Africa, boasting some of the most spectacular scenery of any road event in the world.
The Two Oceans was the brainchild of Dave Venter who, like many visionaries, met with nothing but opposition when he first mooted the idea of an ultra race around - and over - the mountains guarding Cape Town, the legislative capital of South Africa.
The 13320 entries, 9200 for the ultra and 4120 for the accompanying half marathon, is a record for the combined event since the introduction of the half marathon two years ago.

The 21 km half marathon was introduced a few years ago, together with three fun runs, to broaden the event and allow a greater number of people to enjoy the race.
The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon race organisers have been under pressure to increase prize money for the half (which it has done significantly for the 2006 event), and to ensure that the half gets increased consideration in terms of its public profile.
There are marathons (and ultras) held in November, December, January and February throughout South Africa when the country is at its hottest and a great majority of Two Oceans runners are running their qualifying marathons during this period.

I was hesitant to venture all the way to South Africa to run a marathon, but Cape Town and its surrounds turned out to be a diamond in the rough - not only in terms of their sheer beauty among the rugged mountains, but in the contrast/dichotomy of it's economic classes as well.
The marathon was the original excuse for this trip, but it soon became an after-thought as I began planning the trip, and later as I became entranced with the people, location and vacation itself.
The Two Oceans Marathon is 56km (36 miles) and the Comrades is 54 miles.

I liked the marathon in the past but nowadays I prefer the half marathon because though you have to be fit, you can test yourself without hurting yourself.
Another was the silver for the Two Oceans in 1990 when I ran under 4 minutes a km.
But I set myself a target like Two Oceans this year and that was great because I ran with friends and my daughter and when you have a good day like that it gives you enormous satisfaction.
