Two features which can often be noted on these late two-handers imply that they were no longer intended primarily for warfare; the positioning of the lugs so close to the hilt that the ricasso cannot be grasped behind them, and the developing of the counter-guards to cover the ricasso, which has the same effect.

The Long sword or Two handed sword: The Claymore and Doublehander swords of the late middle ages in combat
Sword design from the bronze age into the medieval period saw the gradual lengthening of the sword, both of the blade and then of the hilt.
These swords were designed to be used with both hands on the elongated grip or with one hand on the grip and the other on a covered center part of the blade designed for leverage.
The two most famous users of these long sword types were the Scottish highlanders with their two handed claymores and the Germanic Landsknecht mercenaries.

The Dane Medieval Two Handed Sword
Swords with extremely long grips were popular in Scandinavia and possibly northern Germany in the 15th C. Interestingly, swords of similar size and proportions were also made/used in Italy at the same time (one fine example is exhibited in Brescia).
When used in half swording, they could almost qualify as a kind of short pole arm: its thick, stiff blade and tremendous awl point would have been devastating when the swordsman put the full momentum of his body behind a thrust.
Even if a sword cut can never really be expected to cleave armour, a blow from a blade with the mass and stiffness of these swords would still deal terrible damage, stunning or perhaps even killing.

Clearly swords were evolving to become better able to deal powerful and stiff thrusts, and the developments in armour, with the increasing coverage of plate in the middle and second half of the 14thC probably being a driving-force behind this development.

This massive sword is most commonly the claymore, the huge six-foot ceremonial blade that deals frightening amounts of damage and can often shear straight through armour.
Smaller swords are also known; all two-handed swords are sheathed at the back and require both hands to weild properly; thus the two-handed sword often serves as both attack and defense.
The heaviness of the blade is used to shear through armour and bone instead of the sharpness of the blade, and with swords as huge as these, it is no great difficulty.
