Two pence blue - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Two Penny Blue was the world’s second official postage stamp.
It was intended that the 2d blue was to be issued at the same time as the 1d fl, however there is doubt about this - the earliest post mark seen on one of these was the 8th of May 1840, two days later than the penny fl.
Later when the colour of the stamps were being revised, the colours chosen were red-brown for the penny value and a new blue ink for the two pence value.

 Rare & Valuable Error Twopences
In 1971, the decimal twopence or two pence became legal tender, although it had been available for some time before as part of a five coin familiarisation pack issued in a blue wallet.
At first, all the new decimal coins carried the inscription "xxx new pence" or "new penny", to distinguish the new decimal pennies from the old pre-decimal pennies.
Interestingly an error occurred at the Royal Mint in 1983, as a small number of twopences was issued with the inscription "new pence" instead of "two pence".

Alphabetilately: M is for Mulready Envelope
The Mulready (Artist/Designer, William Mulready; Engraver, John Thompson; Printers, William Clowes & Sons) was issued in two denominations, One Penny (fl ink on cream paper) and Two Pence (blue ink on cream paper), in two different colors to distinguish the denominations, and in two different formats - unfolded envelopes and unfolded letter sheets.
Envelopes were still a novelty at the time, as the prior postal rates had been based not on weight but on the number of sheets of paper, and an envelope counted as one sheet, doubling the rate.
I suspect this text was a significant part of the reason for the reaction to the Mulreadys - people resented the implication that they needed everything spelled out; but I am glad from this perspective of time to have all these interesting details set down.
