The South Asian Zoo Association for Regional Cooperation SAZARC closed its Sixth Annual meeting at an informal but enthusiastic Valedictory ceremony at Karl Kubel Institute at Anaikatti, Coimbatore on 5th December, and sent participants to different quarters of India to visit various well-managed zoos of the country.

To organize a country-wise national level zoo event such as a training or seminar during 2006 on some important aspect of zoo management in order to include more individuals and thus strengthen their national zoo community.

IPPL believes that the species would have a better chance of recovery if the zoos claiming to want to help the species would pool their resources and help protect the animals in the wild and rehabilitate animals held in captivity in Indonesia.
Unfortunately, the high-level tier of procurement of rare animals for zoos which are well-known, well-connected and well-funded zoos may cause disreputable zoos to want the animals the big zoos get, since they draw crowds and revenue.
Suggest that the Ministry request zoos interested in saving the species to spend the money they would spend on obtaining and building housing for proboscis monkeys on projects to protect the animals in their natural habitat and establishing a well-run sanctuary for any that come into captivity.

Author’s Note:  SSP stands for Species Survival Plan.  To be accredited by the American Zoological and Aquarium Association (AZA), zoos holding a species covered by a SSP must become members of that SSP.  The European equivalent is the EEP.
Toby will often interact with the docents and the visitors and he is one of my favorite bonobos.  I wanted to understand better how the SSP works and to share what I learned.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo, there are 29 bonobos living in a sanctuary or other facilities.  However, these animals are not included in the managed captive population.

On this photograph, the white genital tuft, which is typical of adult males of this species, is visible.
