NEW YORK — Tyco International's audit firm questioned Tyco's decision not to disclose millions in employee loans and bonuses, but it didn't object when Tyco's top executives said the payments weren't important for investors, the company's former lead auditor testified Wednesday.
On the stand at the trial of former Tyco CEO Dennis Kozlowski, Richard Scalzo, a PricewaterhouseCoopers partner, testified that his audit teams listed some of the payments as "critical items" that were sent to the company after the auditors reviewed material for Tyco's financial statements.
Nonetheless, Scalzo testified that the audit firm accepted Tyco's explanation that the loans and bonuses, though large, were not material to the bottom line of a conglomerate that at the time had $36 billion in annual revenue.
