The Top Tye was one of those runs that remained relatively unknown despite its easy access from a major state highway and proximity to the greater Seattle area.
Exit the river here from the pool at the base of this last mini canyon rapid as there is a good trail on river left up to the road.
The take-out is at mile 55.3 at a large pullout on the downstream river left side of the Highway 2 bridge.

The North and South Forks of the Rockfish River converge near the intersection of Routes 6 and 151; from there, the River continues south to the James River, traversing Route 29 at the Hurricane Camille/Nelson County Wayside at Woods Mill.
The Tye River flows south from the County’s northern border to the James River, and is joined in its course by Piney River, which forms a portion of Nelson’s western border.
As the Rockfish River does in the eastern portion of the County, the greenway system formed by the Tye, the Piney, and the Blue Ridge Rail Trail spans the western edge of Nelson from north to south.

This place became the county seat of Nelson when it was formed from Amherst in 1807.
Near here lived Anthony and Benjamin Rucker - inventors of the James River batteau, which superseded the double dugout canoe and rolling road for transporting tobacco hogsheads.
These long (about 50 or 60 feet), double-ended vessels dominated the commerical traffic on the James River and other Southern upland waterways between the 1770s and 1840s.

On 11 June 1864, about 800 yards east, the Botetourt Battery prevented the destruction of the Orange and Alexandria Railroad bridge across the Tye River.
This bridge was an important part of the Confederate railroad network for the movement of troops and supplies throughout Virginia.
