		Tylor maintained that culture evolved from the simple to the complex, and that all societies passed through the three basic stages of development suggested by Montesquieu: from savagery through barbarism to civilization.
		Tylor believed that there was a kind of psychic unity among all peoples that explained parallel evolutionary sequences in different cultural traditions.
		Tylor formulated a definition of culture: “Culture or civilization is that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society,” and also developed the idea of survivals.

		Edward Burnett Tylor, one of the founders the modern academic discipline of Anthropology, belongs to a generation of academics known as the Intellectualists which includes Müller, Spencer, and Frazer, all of who helped pave the way for the modern academic study of religion.
		In 1875, Tylor received an honorary doctorate from Oxford University where he was keeper of the Oxford University Museum (1883) and Britain's first (indeed, the first in the English-speaking world) Professor of Anthropology (1896), until his retirement in 1909.
		The goal of anthropological study, for Tylor, was to develop a framework in which the evolution of culture could be explained and the nature of its origins understood.

		Not even Tylor is safe, but Yamamoto in particular is a slave to the plot--he repeatedly does an about-face on his changes of heart so that he can play the holdout and have another dramatic change of heart.
		Tylor himself, of course, is the dead opposite--his "take it easy, do what you like, be nice and things will work out" mindset is completely at odds with old-school military discipline, and also happens to fly in the face of classic Japanese values.
		Since Tylor is, of course, the hero of the story, you could take that to mean that the purpose of the whole series is to poke fun at the antiquated nature of the military culture and good-guys/bad guys mentality that still holds a dominant place in politics.
