 Tylosaurus nepaeolicus
Tylosaurus nepaeolicus (Cope 1874) is one of the least well known of the five species of mosasaurs that are recognized from the lower Smoky Hill Chalk Member (upper Coniacian) of the Niobrara Formation in western Kansas.
Tylosaurus proriger, on the other hand, is well represented by dozens of skulls and many complete specimens in museums around the world.
Tylosaurus nepaeolicus is one of five mosasaur species identified from the upper Coniacian of the Western Interior Sea (Everhart, 2001).

Tylosaurus had a round bump on the top of its snout, bony plates on its head for protection, and scales covering its entire body.
Tylosaurus fossils have large muscle attachment marks, so some scientists think it could swim far, perhaps scaring its prey into shallow water and then attacking, as killer whales do.
Tylosaurus may instead have lurked in murky water, as many smaller mosasaurs did, lying in wait for prey to wander close by and then lifting its head to snap it up.

Despite the overall skull shape, Plesiotylosaurus is not closely related to Tylosaurus, and researchers traditionally classify the genus in the subfamily Plioplatecarpine close to Prognathodon; however, Bell (1997) classifies Plesiotylosaurus as a close relative of Globidens in the Mosasaurinae.
Tylosaurus is a very large, highly predatory mosasaur known from a number of complete skeletons and skulls, though the holotype skull from the Museum of Comparative Zoology appears to be lost.

The specimen was identified as Tylosaurus proriger on the basis of the following characters: the lateral overlap of the prefrontal by the post-orbital frontal, the large infrastapedial process of the quadrate and the location of the parietal foramen.

 RE: paleonet Mosasaurs ate plesiosaurs
Although the remains of a juvenile polycotylid plesiosaur as stomach contents of a large mosasaur (Tylosaurus) were first discovered by Charles Sternberg in 1918, his brief report did not receive much attention at the time, and the association went unnoticed.
The juvenile polycotylid was certainly a large item to swallow, but well within the capabilities of a large Tylosaurus with its powerful bite and flexible (snakelike) skull and lower jaws.
Although plesiosaurs had not been previously documented in the diet of mosasaurs, they should not be unexpected since Tylosaurus, in particular, is known to have consumed large fish, birds and other mosasaurs.
