Tynda werd als stad gesticht in 1975, hoewel de nederzetting al eerder bestond onder de naam Tyndisky.
In 1932 werd begonnen het eerste deel van de BAM (Baikal-Amoer Spoorlijn) nabij Tynda.
Tynda is een kleine en vooral erg jonge stad, waardoor het weinig bezienswaardigheden heeft.
