With the transfer of responsibility for continental air defense from the active duty component of the Air Force to the Air National Guard, First Air Force became the first numbered air force to be made up primarily of citizen airmen.
One of the original four numbered air forces formed in the United States in 1940, the First Air Force was activated as the Northeast Air District on Dec. 18, 1940 at Mitchell Field, Long Island, New York.
Following World War II this air force was involved in air defense and reserve training and concentrated entirely upon air defense in the latter 1960s and again after 1985.

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE - Five teams of Air Force fighter pilots resumed an air-to-air combat competition Monday after an eight-year hiatus due to real world demands in such hot spots as Iraq and Bosnia.
It has been added to the two-week competition because of the Air Force's new focus on homeland defense in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that were carried out with hijacked jetliners, Bradshaw said.
In 1996, these F-16 Fighting Falcon jets from Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., and Hill Air Force Base, Utah, were the first Air Force Reserve planes to participate in the William Tell air-to-air weapons meet at Tyndall Air Force Base.

The name of Tyndall Field was suggested by Congressman Bob Sikes of the Third Congressional District of Florida, in memory of Lt. Frank B. Tyndall, a World War I ace, who was killed on active duty in 1930.
The 325th FW is responsible for building an “air superiority team.” The wing conducts training for F-15 pilots, air traffic controllers, F-15 specific intelligence personnel, weapons controllers and crew chiefs specially trained on the F-15.
