Tyne Tunnel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Tyne Tunnel is a two-lane toll vehicular tunnel under the River Tyne, England, completed in 1967, and connecting Jarrow on the south side of the river with Howdon on the north.
The tunnel is one of three forming the Tyne Tunnel project; less well known are the pedestrian and cyclists' tunnels opened in 1951.
A scheme for the construction of a set of three tunnels under the Tyne was put forward by the Durham and Northumberland County Councils in 1937.

The Tyne Tunnel project comprises three tunnels under the River Tyne from Jarrow in the County of Durham to Howdon in the County of Northumberland.
Here the line of the tunnel, in its descent from the portal, had passed beneath the glacial deposits to be totally enclosed in coal measure rocks at a depth of 120 ft. These two shafts were driven through the boulder clay and silt beds to join it in the rock strata.
The main roundabout at the entrance to the tunnel and much of the carriageway in the vicinity had to be founded on piles and the carriageway itself carried on an elaborate concrete raft designed to mitigate the effects of future subsidence.
