The 60 mile (96 km) line was built in the 1830s, and links the city of Newcastle upon Tyne in Tyne and Wear with Carlisle in Cumbria.
The line was built in sections from 1834 onwards; the entire route between Carlisle London Road station and Redheugh in Gateshead was formally opened to passengers on 18 June 1838.
Tyne Valley trains from Newcastle were diverted to use the present route, crossing the King Edward Bridge south-west of Newcastle Central Station, and running via Dunston to Blaydon.

The Hope Valley Line is a railway line in England linking Sheffield with Manchester.
From Sheffield station, trains head down the Midland Main Line to Dore, where the Hope Valley Line branches off to run through the Totley Tunnel.
The line then runs through Chinley before splitting, the northern branch running via New Mills toward Manchester Piccadilly, the southern passes through the Disley Tunnel before merging with the Buxton line and then heading to Stockport.

From the start, all proposals to connect the River Tyne with the Solway Coast, first by canal in 1794, and then by rail in 1825, expected the lead mines of the north Pennines to be a major source of traffic.
A 17 mile branch line from Haltwhistle to Nenthead was proposed by the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway Company, which first connected the east and west coasts of Britain when it opened its main line from the Tyne at Redheugh to Carlisle canal basin on 18th June 1838.
From Lambley, the Newcastle line continued north to Haltwhistle, while the Darlington plans show a main line running westwards, about one mile to the north of Lord Carlisle’s Railway, to which a branch was to be built at Halton Lea Gate.

Trains were run on Sundays alternatively from Manchester Victoria via the Calder Valley and Manchester Piccadilly via the trans Pennine line through Huddersfield to Leeds and then via Ribblehead (with a 15-min photo stop) to Carlisle (approx 3 hour stop).
Return was via the Tyne Valley line and (for the last 4) over both of the Tyne Bridges through Newcastle to York and Leeds.
The third train was on Sunday 27th August 1989 from Denby Dale and local satations via Huddersfield to Castleford ran to Whitby along the Esk Valley line, tickets were £10 for adults and £6 for children.

The Border Counties Railway was built between 1855 and 1862, running from Hexham station on the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, up the North Tyne valley to Bellingham and across the border into Scotland, joining the Carlisle to Edinburgh line at Riccarton Junction, an isolated settlement with no road access.
Running north from Hexham, the stations on the line were at Wall, Chollerford, Chollerton, Barrasford, Wark, Reedsmouth Junction, Bellingham, Charlton (closed 1862), Tarset, Thorneyburn, Falstone, Plashetts, Lewiefield Halt, Kielder, Deadwater, Saughtree and Riccarton.
Originally intended to serve the colliery at Plashetts (now submerged deep under the Kielder Reservoir) and other small mines in the area, the 42 mile single track line eventually formed a vital lifeline for these small communities of the North Tyne for around a century, until it was finally closed in 1958.

The nearest stations are at Prudhoe and Stocksfield on the Tyne-Valley Line.
