The rich font system used the PS graphics primitives to draw characters as line art, which could then be rendered at any resolution.
Type 1 was effectively a simplification of the PS system to store outline information only, as opposed to being a complete language (PDF is similar in this regard).
One is that the fonts on other systems required the user to keep not only bitmaps for the screen, but also Type 1 for the printer.

Truetype versus type 1   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The type 1 people put the absolute minimum in a font: name information, character width information, an encoding vector (the encoding vector says in what numerical position we must place the letter "a", for example), and the character outlines in the form of cubic Bezier curves.
There are human-readable forms of type 1 fonts, and somehow, the fonts feel like the cars from the fifties and sixties---in case of a problem, they can easily be fixed by the driver or any random mechanic, unlike the modern day machines with their electronic ignitions and remote control starters.
It is clear that nearly all fonts descend from the type 1 tribe.

The characters on these systems were "drawn" as a series of dots, the proper dots to use defined as a (A specific size and style of type within a type family) font table inside the printer.
Almost as complex as PostScript itself was PS's handling of (A specific size and style of type within a type family) fonts.
The rich font system used the PS graphics primitives to draw characters as line art, which could then be rendered at any (Analysis into clear-cut components) resolution.

PostScript is an object-oriented language, meaning that it treats images, including fonts, as collections of geometrical objects rather than as bit maps.
PostScript fonts are outline fonts stored in the computer memory as a set of instructions for drawing the circles, straight lines, and curves that make up the outline of each character.

Multiple Master Type 1 Font Programs
These fonts contain two or more complete sets of character outlines, bound in a single font program, from which any number of intermediate instances of the font can be generated.
A specially designed multiple master font can be scaled to match the metrics of another font in a way that preserves consistent stem widths and spacing characteristics, thus preserving legibility in a manner not previously possible.
Font substitution can allow users to open a document for which the referenced fonts are not available, and still get high quality typography when viewing or printing that document.

It was this issue that led Apple to design their own system, TrueType, around 1991.
In the early 1990s there were several other systems for storing outline-based fonts, developed by Bitstream and Metafont for instance, but none included a general-purpose printing solution and they were therefore not widely used as a result.

The hinting method of the Type 1 format is relatively simple: Most hints are declarative statements stating where key features of a character are located.
The 1000 to 1 scaling in the Font- Matrix as shown is typical of a Type 1 font program and is highly recommended.
With the hints in place, Type 1 can produce results that are as close as possible to the original design even though the shape is reproduced by a relatively small number of pixels.

Usability News - 2.2 - 2000 -- So, What Size and Type of Font Should I Use on My Website?
The 12-point Arial font was the most preferred (though not significantly preferred over the 12-point TNR font) and was perceived as being the most legible and sharpest font by the participants.
The 12-point TNR font, however, was the fastest font to read, was the second to most preferred (along with 12-point anti-aliased font), and was perceived as the second to most legible.
One reason for this could be that at smaller font sizes on computer screens, the serifs stop acting as distinguishers and start becoming visual 'noise.' Moreover, small anti-aliased fonts may create even more visual noise because of the smoothing effects of the anti-aliased font.

Beyond the Type: Exploring Font Foundries Other Than Adobe
DTP has brought publishing to the masses but has also devalued and commoditized type to the point where users get most of their fonts in software bundles, through piracy or as downloads of low-quality freeware.
As the maker of PostScript font technology and Adobe Type 1 (also called PostScript fonts), they so overshadow the font market that some publishers and printers are reluctant to use fonts from other manufacturers.
Besides avoiding discount fonts for high-quality print publishing, Williams suggested purchasing an inexpensive font from the foundry or vendor under consideration and dissect their work.
