The Leander class, informally known as the Type 12M, comprising twenty-six frigates, was arguably the most successful and popular class of frigates in the Royal Navy's modern history.
The first batch, comprising 8 ships and built between 1963 and 1965, were general purpose alternatives to the far more expensive single-role classes such as the Rothesay class frigates and Whitby class frigates.

 LEANDER class
The Leander class never had a frigate type number, in particular not “Type 12M.” Type-numbering of new designs was functionally irrelevant after the RN abandoned the mobilization strategy in 1954.
The first three Leanders to be modernized were withdrawn from service during 1970–71 even while the final four of the class were being built largely to the then-obsolescent original design.

The Leander class (informally known as the Type 12M) comprised 26 frigates and was arguably the most successful class of frigates in the Royal Navy's modern history.
Batch One comprising eight ships, commissioning between 1963 and 1966, were general purpose alternatives to the far more expensive single-role frigates such as the Rothesay and Whitby classes.
Batch Two, comprising six ships (1966 to 1967), were designed for the ASW role and were only slightly revised to the batch ones, in that they had a different engine design, known as the Y136.

Horizon: The Common New Generation Frigate
The Type 42 destroyers were at a very early stage of development, as was their sister ships the Type 22 frigates (to replace the Leander class (Type 12M)), and so a large gap was threatening to open up in the Royal Navy's modern fleet escort surface vessels.
The Type 22 frigates are among the most successful warships built for the Royal Navy since 1945, but there continued evolution has led to a ship that is probably closer to a cruiser or destroyer (in terms of capability and cost) than a simple frigate, particularly in their weapons fit.
The Type 23 was originally envisaged to act as a platform for a towed sonar array, carry light missile system against air attack and have facilities to land and refuel helicopters, although it would not carry a hangar.

The third batch of ten had their beam increased to 43 feet, which increased stability and internal volume.
At their mid-life refits, the Batch I ships (except Penelope and Cleopatra) were converted to carry the Ikara anti-submarine system (which replaced the 4.5 inch gun turret), as installed on HMS Bristol (Type 82 destroyer).

The Batch 2 frigates draw on experience of the Batch 1 before the Falklands campaign, and are thus not as refined as the Batch 3, which draws on experience from the Falklands.
Type 42 are, and the names of the Coventry and Sheffield, lost in the Falklands were perpetuated, along with the County class HMS London.
The amidships of the Type 22 Batch 3 was thus considerably modified to accommodate the new 'punch.' The sensible addition of the Mark 8 114 mm gun forward gave a new dimension to the class, and a back-up to the missile armaments.

The USS Leif Ericsson, being the first of her class, has been put through a long shakedown cruise; her systems are top of the line (and some are even a little beyond that) and all testing indicates that actual performance will exceed expectations significantly.
The Leif Ericsson class is yet another ship designed to replace the Galaxy class; of all of them, this is the one that is most capable of succeeding in that massive task.
The secondary mission of this starship class is to serve as a heavy-combat capable, robust and resilient, fast moving, and hard-striking weapons platform for small border skirmishes and police actions on up through large fleet actions and engagements during times of war.
