		The third HMAS Swan (DE-50) was a River class frigate laid down by the Williamstown Dockyard at Melbourne in Victoria on 16 February 1965, launched on 16 December 1967 and commissioned on 20 January 1970.

		The Leander is generally known as a General Purpose Frigate, though her actual classification was Antisubmarine, they proved to be superb sea keepers and generally reliable.
		Leanders were built in three batches, the batch 1 was converted to Ikara.
		The Type 12 was the first RN ship with a dedicated Operations Room designed to provide the ship with a fighting centre, this was extended in size for the Leander class.

		The Leander class never had a frigate type number, in particular not “Type 12M.” Type-numbering of new designs was functionally irrelevant after the RN abandoned the mobilization strategy in 1954.
		The first three Leanders to be modernized were withdrawn from service during 1970–71 even while the final four of the class were being built largely to the then-obsolescent original design.
		The Type 965 air-search radar, a major advance over the Type 12 design, was jocularly called 'the key,' as in a clockwork-driven toy.

		The Batch 2 were refitted in the late 60’s and early 70’s, the forward limbo was removed to form a flight deck and the aft superstructure converted to a hanger for the Wasp helicopter.
		The Type 81 Tribal class frigate appeared as a general purpose frigate designed to operate in the warmer waters of the Gulf and Far East where the submarine threat was not so all consuming as in the Atlantic.
		The Type 12 building program was extended, and the ship redesigned, the main change was the inclusion of a helicopter, later retro fitted to the Batch 2 Type 12, in addition a 199 variable depth sonar was specified and the Seacat anti aircraft missile system.

		The Type 42 destroyers were at a very early stage of development, as was their sister ships the Type 22 frigates (to replace the Leander class (Type 12M)), and so a large gap was threatening to open up in the Royal Navy's modern fleet escort surface vessels.
		The Type 22 frigates are among the most successful warships built for the Royal Navy since 1945, but there continued evolution has led to a ship that is probably closer to a cruiser or destroyer (in terms of capability and cost) than a simple frigate, particularly in their weapons fit.
		The Type 23 was originally envisaged to act as a platform for a towed sonar array, carry light missile system against air attack and have facilities to land and refuel helicopters, although it would not carry a hangar.
