Type 22 frigate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Type 22 Broadsword class frigates are a class of warships built for the Royal Navy.
The Type 22 was designed to be a specialist anti-submarine warfare vessel as part of the Royal Navy's contribution to NATO.
Since then they have evolved into a general purpose frigate with weapons for use against other surface ships, aircraft and submarines.

Type 21 frigate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Type 21 frigate or Amazon class frigate was a Royal Navy general-purpose escort designed in the late 1960s, built in the 1970s and that served throughout the 1980s into the 1990s.
Many older vessels were rapidly approaching the end of their useful lives yet their replacements, the Type 42 destroyer and Type 22 frigate, would not be ready until the mid-to-late 1970s.
They were also the first design to enter service that used solely gas-turbine propulsion (the Type 42 was designed to use this system first), as opposed to the steam turbines or diesel engines of their predecessors.

Ships of the Royal Navy - Type 22 Frigates
Type 22 frigates were divided into three batches, although only batches 2 and 3 remain in active service.
Two of the Batch 1 frigates (HMS BROADSWORD and HMS BRILLIANT) served with distinction in the Falkland's war and HMS BRILLIANT was the subject of a BBC documentary shortly before she was decommissioned.
However, the Type 22 does not have the same stealth-characteristics of the Type 23 and so it is likely that the Type 22 will be of more use in an escort role rather than an independent command.

Royal Navy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The end of the Cold War with the collapse of the Soviet Union has precipitated a restructuring of the Royal Navy's role as a major naval player in the 21st century, from that of a deterrence force to a navy capable of extending British foreign policy worldwide.
In the latter stages of the Cold War, the Royal Navy was reconfigured with three anti-submarine warfare aircraft carriers and a force of small frigates and destroyers.
At the beginning of the 1990s, the Royal Navy was a force designed for the Cold War - with its three ASW aircraft carriers and a force of small frigates and destroyers, its purpose was to search for and destroy Soviet submarines in the North Atlantic.
