Navy News - Ships of the Royal Navy - Type 23 Background   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The Type 23 frigate is a true child of the Falklands War, as it represented the first occasion in which the painful lessons of the South Atlantic could be applied to a new class of ship.
Type 23 frigates were the first ships designed for the Royal Navy as stealth vessels, and as such, 'signature reduction' - the elimination of as much noise, heat and reflection as possible - was an important factor in the shape of the hull and installation of machinery.
Type 23 frigates now operate worldwide as singletons - on their own, maybe with just a small Fleet tanker for support - but can just as easily be called in to act as a close escort for a task group.

Type 23 frigate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Type 23 frigate is a class of warship serving with the Royal Navy, also known as the Duke class.
The Type 23 was initially conceived as anti-submarine warfare platform, with a Lynx or EH-101 Merlin helicopter and a towed-array sonar, intended to replace the frigates of the Leander class.
HMS Westminster was used for the Type 23 interior shots in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies in three different roles as HMS Chester, HMS Devonshire and HMS Bedford.

The frigate's role was further expanded to cover all forms of naval operations with the addition of Harpoon and Sea Wolf missile systems.

Telegraph | News | Ferry hits Navy's new frigate
The Type 23 frigate St Albans, which has yet to enter full operational service, was lying at her berth at Portsmouth naval base when she was struck by the much larger P and O ferry, Pride of Portsmouth, in darkness early yesterday.
The 4,000-ton frigate sustained serious damage to her starboard side, including the bridge, boat deck and gunnery direction deck, in the collision, which happened as the ferry was negotiating the narrow waterway leading to the Portsmouth ferry terminal at the end of her voyage from Le Havre.
There were no injuries to the 37 men aboard the frigate, and no injuries among the 850 passengers and 130 crew of the ferry, which suffered superficial damage to her hull.

The BAE Type 45 PCO submitted revised pricing for the completion of the Batch 2 units (T45-04 to 06) in June 2005, and also as option provided pricing for the hoped for final two units (T45-07 and 08).
Since late 2005 the MOD has referred to "up to eight" Type 45 destroyers, and there seems to be a decreasing chance that 07 and 08 will be ordered, indeed there have been suggestions that only two of the Batch 2's may be completed due to lack of funding.
A national programme to replace the Type 42 Destroyers was the originally preferred procurement route and UK-only Type 43 and 44 programmes were considered.

Type 23 (Duke Class) Frigate (UK)
The Type 22 frigates are among the most successful warships built for the Royal Navy since 1945, but their continued evolution has led to a ship that is probably closer to a cruiser or destroyer (in terms of capability and cost) than a simple frigate, particularly in their weapons fit.
The ship now began to approach the Type 22 for cost and complexity and these were not yet the last changes that would be made.
Despite the various technical and political problems that have surrounded the Type 23 frigate, the final ship is a well balanced design but also an excellent anti-submarine platform.

The film centers around the adventures of a Royal Navy Type 23 frigate on patrol in nondescript tropical waters, and covers its entanglement with a banana republic warlord and his pirates.
As part of what is effectively a navy-funded and centered theme park, the producers presumably had a bit of a balancing act in making this film; attempting to make a good film, a realistic portrayal of Britain's modern Royal Navy and a suitable recruitment tool at the same time.
It restores a bit of faith in the image of the Royal Navy and the footage of the frigate storming through the sea to sort out the bad guys and the Marines shooting the hell out of the pirates - all to the thumping soundtrack - are pretty sexy.
