The torpedo boat destroyer later on took over the role of the smaller torpedo boats, performing torpedo attacks on fleets, such as the devastating Japanese attack on the Russian fleet in Port Arthur at the opening of the Russo-Japanese war in 1904, and attacks in the Pacific theatre of World War II.
Destroyers (with a DD hull classification symbol) primarily perform anti-submarine warfare duty while guided missile destroyers (DDGs) are multi-mission (anti-submarine, anti-aircraft, and anti-surface warfare) surface combatants.
The destroyers (as well as frigates) are, as always, the workhorses of the fleet, the former optimised for air defence and the latter for surface and subsurface warfare.

The Type 42 class has always suffered from its cramped accomodation, a problem for both crew safety and comfort and also when finding space for upgrades.

The Falklands War demonstrated the Type 42 design was vulnerable to low level sea skimming missiles and aircraft.
During the Falklands Conflict (1982) this was a major problem as HMS Sheffield was destroyed not by the detonation of the exocet missile, but by the fires that spread through the ship at a rapid rate.
The first Type 42 to decommission, Birmingham, was paid off at the end of 1999.

PAAMS, the Type 45’s main armament, was originally intended to equip the CNGF and in spite of early difficulties, due in part to differing national requirements, it has survived, to meet the UK national and ongoing Franco-Italian Horizon requirements.

The Type 42 provided a reduced "economy" on the smallest possible hull, with maximum automation for the smallest possible crew, carrying the heaviest possible armament.
The great problem with this gas-turbine propulsion is the extreme noise it develops, rendering the Type 42 unsuited for long, slow stalking of a quiet submarine [the well silenced diesel electric Type 23 being far more suited for this task].
