The Type 45 AAW Destroyer will represent a step change in the air defence capability of the Royal Navy in comparison with the class of ships that it replaces and, arguably, will be the benchmark capability for maritime air defence when it enters service.
Type 45 is somewhat larger than the Type 42 destroyer that it replaces and, at 152m length overall and 7,350 tonnes deep displacement, is significantly larger than the Type 23 frigate that will operate alongside it.
Overall, the Type 45 Destroyer offers a potent new capability for the Royal Navy, centred on air defence but providing a flexible package that is able to carry out a variety of tasks and will be able to accommodate new capabilities that are required through its service life.

The BAE Type 45 PCO submitted revised pricing for the completion of the Batch 2 units (T45-04 to 06) in June 2005, and also as option provided pricing for the hoped for final two units (T45-07 and 08).
Since late 2005 the MOD has referred to "up to eight" Type 45 destroyers, and there seems to be answer decreasing chance that 07 and 08 will be ordered, indeed there have been suggestions that only two of the Batch 2's may be completed due to lack of funding.
A national programme to replace the Type 42 Destroyers was the originally preferred procurement route and UK-only Type 43 and 44 programmes were considered.

It is the third project undertaken by the Royal Navy to replace the Type 42 Destroyers, the first two- NFR 90 and Project Horizon- ended in failure.
The Type 45 will be the first Royal Navy warships to be powered by integrated electric propulsion, which requires less maintenance and lower fuel consumption costs than alternative sources of power.

The Type 45's are urgently needed as replacements for the obsolete Type 42 destroyers, which will average 29 years old when replaced by the Type 45.
The Type 45 will have a much smaller missile battery than existing AEGIS/Standard equipped American (Arleigh Burke), Japanese (Kongo) destroyers, and the planned South Korean (KDX-3) destroyers, but the potential to increase the number VLS cells from 48 to 64 on the Type 45 does improve the situation.
The Type 45 is also sometimes compared with the new DD 21 Land Attack Destroyer being developed United States Navy which is due to enter service from 2010, only three years after the Type 45.

At the end of the twentieth century the British Royal Navy urgently needed a replacement for their aging Type 42 Air Defense Destroyers, which were undersized, underpowered, under armed and more than at the end of their useful service life.
Only armed with a Vickers 4.5 inch gun, a inefficient 48 cell Sylver type VLS, two manually aimed 30 mm cannons, four torpedo tubes and two Phalanx CIWS, the first ships were *very* under armed for their size.
The Daring and the Diamond were destroyed during huge ley line storms, but the Dauntless survived, although a freak accident (so common during those days....) froze her and her crew solid, and encased her in a huge iceberg.

Brigadier Keith Prentice, leader of the DPA's Type 45 Integrated Project Team, said that the decision to select Marconi (now BAE SYSTEMS) as prime contractor was taken on the basis of its previous deep involvement with Horizon IJVC, the prime contractor designate for the abortive Horizon effort.
Although the operational requirements for Type 45 does not currently include the installation of land attack cruise missiles or anti-ballistic missile missiles, Brig Prentice said the design would have "sufficient margins available" to accommodate alternative weapons and their associated launcher systems.
Current plans are for the Type 45 to be equipped with a 48-cell SYLVER VLS (procured as part of the PAAMS contract).

The currently planned complement of the type 45 is approximately 190 personnel, of whom around 20 will be officers and 170 other ranks.
Assuming a class of 12 type 45s, we expect that nine or 10 ships would, on average, be available at any one time to the Commander-in-Chief Fleet for tasking, while two or three would be undergoing maintenance, including one or two in refit.
The type 45 destroyer will be a versatile platform, able to operate a variety of other helicopters; the ship's large flight deck can take helicopters up to and including Chinook size.
