USS LIBERTY Court of Inquiry Testimony Concerning Torpedo Attack
The torpedo hit, it seemed like it was quite a while before the torpedo actually hit and the time we were told to prepare ourselves.
We were told to brace ourselves for a second torpedo attack, and the only thing we could do was go inside and find a couple of the wounded on the floor to find places where they weren't wounded and lay across their bodies so in case the torpedo did hit they wouldn't be thrown around.
But when the torpedo hit, the logroom in damage control central was in a shambles, the safe door blew open, logs went flying off the shelves, we were knocked on the deck, and shortly thereafter the order was passed down to set the destruction bill.

Type XXI U-boats were the first submarines designed to operate entirely submerged, rather than as surface ships that could submerge as a temporary, awkward mode of operation.

The PLA Navy received an unknown number of the Russian 53-65KE wave-homing anti-ship torpedo along with its purchase of four Kilo class submarines in the 1990s.
The torpedo is fitted with a unique wave-homing system, which enables the torpedo to chase the tail marks of surface ships.
The torpedo’s course, depth, and roll control system provides for two-plane manoeuvring of the torpedo and steers it into the proximity fuse actuation zone or ensures a direct hit on the target.

However, as Russian aviation cruisers carriy a small airforce of 19 KA-27PL ASW helicopters, the combination of the two types of vessels would provide good all round capabilities.
With the addition of other smaller vessels providing additional Asuw, AAW and ASW capabilities, the Moscow-class would be more than sufficient for aviation cruiser escort - in which case the larger and more "all round" Ushakov-class vessels could be used as "center pieces" in task forces of their own.
