Type 82 destroyer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Type 82 or Bristol class destroyer was to be a class of four Royal Navy warships intended as area air-defence destroyers to escort the planned CVA-01 aircraft carriers.
Sometimes described as a "cruiser", she was officially classified as a destroyer as the former term had fallen out of favour with governments keen to reduce manpower-intensive cruisers and aircraft carriers.
The role which the Type 82 was built for never materialised and as such she spent most of her service in the 1970s trialling and building up experience using the new weapons and computer systems.

Type 42, also known as the Sheffield class, was a class of destroyers of the Royal Navy.
The Type 42 Destroyer was built to fill in the gap left by the cancellation of the Type 82 Destroyer, it was however, designed to be smaller and more cost effective.
The Type 42 is also equipped with a 4.5 inch (114mm) main gun, six torpedo launchers, and two Vulcan Phalanx Mk.15 Close-In Weapons Systems (CIWS) were fitted after the loss of the Sheffield to an Exocet missile.

The '''Type 82 class destroyer''', also known as as the '''''Bristol'' class''' was a prototype for much of the modern technology and armaments seen in later classes of Royal Navy warships.
The type was intended as an area air defence destroyer to escort the planned CVA-01 aircraft carrier.
The role the Type 82 was designed for and the role she may have fulfilled (fleet air defence) was instead taken up by the more efficient, smaller Type 42 Destroyer.

 Destroyer
Modern destroyers are equivalent in tonnage but drastically superior in firepower to cruisers of the World War II era, capable of carrying nuclear missiles able to destroy cities in a very small volley.
The torpedo-boat destroyer later on took over the role of the smaller torpedo boats, performing torpedo attacks on fleets, such as the devastating Japanese attack on the Russian fleet in Port Arthur at the opening of the Russo-Japanese War in 1904, and attacks in the Pacific theatre of World War II.
Destroyers (with a DD hull classification symbol) primarily perform anti-submarine warfare duty while guided missile destroyers (DDGs) are multi-mission (anti-submarine, anti-aircraft, and anti-surface warfare) surface combatants.

New additions to the fleet were therefore minimal during the 1920s, the only major new vessels being the two units of the Nelson class of battleships and fifteen heavy cruisers of the County and York classes.
As international tensions increased in the mid-1930s the Second London Naval Treaty of 1935 failed to halt the deterioration into a naval arms race and by 1938 treaty limits were effectively null and void.
In the latter stages of the Cold War, the Royal Navy was reconfigured with three anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft carriers and a force of small frigates and destroyers.

 Type 42
The Type 42 destroyer was developed as a smaller and less expensive alternative to the massive Type 82 destroyer [of which only one was built] that could be built in sufficient numbers to replace the entire Royal Navy destroyer fleet which was heading for block obsolescence in the late 1970's.
Otherwise, the primary change from the Type 82 was the deletion of the Ikara ASW missile and the Limbo ASW mortar, and the addition aft hangar flight deck and helicopter.
The new Type 45 Destroyers are expected to be cheaper to operate and support than the Type 42s, although the cost of individual spares are likely to be slightly higher.

 Sheffield Class Type 42 Destroyers
The principle role of the Sheffield Class Type 42 destroyers is to provide area air defence for a task force and since their introduction into service they have constituted the fleet's principle anti-air warfare capability.
Unlike the Type 82 Destroyer, the Type 42 was designed and built with both a helicopter deck and hanger and one of its most versatile weapons is the Lynx helicopter.
This provides the Type 42's principle anti-submarine weapon and not only extends the range of the destroyer's radar, but it also carries the potent Sea Skua missile, that was used to great effect in the Gulf War.

In the USN today, frigates (a type which will soon retire anyway) are around 3000 tons displacement, destroyers today are tipping out at over 10,000 tons, and cruisers are differentiated from destroyers primarily by their command facilities (above and beyond destroyers) while being similar in tonage and weapons.
Destroyers were orginally 'Torpedo Boat Destroyers'; basically enlarged torpedo boats with a medium calibre quick firing gun to engage opponent torpedo boats (and latter other destroyers).
HMS Bristol, the sole Type 82 (7100 tons and very similar in size to the Type 45) built in the early '70s, was also a destroyer.

The Type 82 destroyer was meant to follow the County Class destroyers into service as the destroyers then in use were upgraded ships from the 'Battle' class and 'Ca' class destroyers which only had limited lifespans.
The Type 82 (the first time a destroyer received a frigate-type designation) were to be roughly the same size as the 'County' class and have a Combined Steam and Gas Turbine (COSAG) propulsion.
Originally, four Type 82s were planned, with the possibility of another four which would replace the first four 'County' class destroyers.

The demise of the CVA-01 carrier programme and the cancellation of all but one of the Type 82 destroyers left the Royal Navy with a problem in the late 1960s.
The limitations of the Seaslug missile on the County class destroyers was already known, but its replacement, the Sea Dart, as part of the GWS30 system had already outgrown the frigates it was intended to be installed into (such as the Leander class).
The Type 42 was ahead of the County and Type 82 destroyers in terms of computers, electronic systems, sonar (Type 184M and Type 162) and the radar (Type 965, Type 992Q and Type 909) equipment, but lacked the close in defence systems of the County class (Seacat missiles) or the Type 82 (Ikara missiles).

The naval version of the Vickers Type 581 was a strong early contender for the new carriers.
In fact the RN quickly recognised that the expensive Type 82 design made little sense with no new carriers to escort, and by August the RN was willing to cancel all 4 units that it was still hoping to get post-CVA-01 in return for 9 extra Leander's.
Experience and study have shown that only one type of operation exists for which carriers and carrier-borne aircraft would be indispensable; that is the landing or withdrawal of troops against sophisticated opposition outside the range of land-based air power.
