climate. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
The transitional climate between those of the subtropical and intermediate zones, known as the Mediterranean type, is found in areas bordering the Mediterranean Sea and on the west coasts of continents.
The coastal, or littoral, climate is one in which the direction of the prevailing winds plays a dominant role—the east coasts having generally the heavier rainfall in the trade-wind belts, the west coasts in westerly belts.
An instance of the coastal type, in which the precipitation is accentuated by the nearness of a mountain barrier, is the west coast of North America from Alaska to Oregon, where the mean annual precipitation averages 80 to 100 in.

 Climate Change Module
The assessment of how the climate in the next century will be affected by the combination of both natural and human factors represents one of the major challenges for science.
An understanding of natural climate variability is also a prerequisite for the early detection of anthropogenic climate change: anthropogenic climate modifications can clearly be distinguished from natural climate fluctuations only if the structure of the natural fluctuations are known.
Climate models have evolved today to a level where realistic simulations of of the evolution of the future global climate can be carried out for given scenarios of future greenhouse gas emissions.

 Ozone - Climate Connection
This type of thinking—which may seem odd to experts who understand the ozone and climate change issues clearly—is a typical mechanism employed in all learning: we extend existing mental models to make sense of new information.
The second type of confusion also inappropriately links two different mental models: the gases that destroy the ozone layer are the same as those that trap heat and cause global warming.
On the other hand, efforts to reduce all types of emissions to limit global warming will also be good for the recovery of the ozone layer.

Extreme Events | Climate Change - Health and Environmental Effects | U.S. EPA
Climate is defined not simply as average temperature and precipitation but also by the type, frequency and intensity of weather events.
Though predicting changes in these types of events under a changing climate is difficult, understanding vulnerabilities to such changes is a critical part of estimating future climate change impacts on human health, society and the environment.
Abrupt climate changes occur when a threshold in the climate system is crossed – a trigger that causes the climate to rapidly shift from one state to a new, different one.

Description of a climate is possible only after weather records have been kept and studied for many years, usually a minimum of 30 years.

The Regional Impacts of Climate Change
Changes in climate will interact with stresses that result from actions to increase agricultural production, affecting crop yields and productivity in different ways, depending on the types of agricultural practices and systems in place.
The positive effects of climate change-such as longer growing seasons, lower natural winter mortality, and faster growth rates in higher latitudes-may be offset by negative factors such as changes in established reproductive patterns, migration routes, and ecosystem relationships.
In regions where agriculture is well adapted to current climate variability and/or where market and institutional factors are in place to redistribute agricultural surpluses to make up for shortfalls, vulnerability to changes in climate means and extremes generally is low.

 BEH Type A Behavior
Occupational stress researchers are particularly interested in the concept of Type A behavior and hostility because of: 1) the possibility that these personality characteristics may moderate the effects of job stressors, and 2) research indicating that Type A is rewarded and reinforced in organizations by income and prestige (4, 5).
Type A is viewed not as a fixed personality trait but "as the outcome of a set of predispositions interacting with specific types of eliciting situations" (8, p.
Since Type A behavior pattern marks a reaction to a certain situation, the Structured Interview is preferred over the others as it evaluates behavior directly and has the strongest association with CHD (Example of SI).

This specific climate forcing was discussed in the 2005 National Research Council report (see topic 3), as well as in several of our papers (Eugster et al.
This study clearly illustrates, however, that vegetation type change even in the natural system is a first-order climate forcing and represents another global heat change effect (global warming is discussed in our August 29th blog).

 Connecting the Dots
Particularly in California. From the California Climate Action Registry to greenhouse gas standards for vehicles to the governor’s emission targets for the state, California is leading the nation toward real action on the issue of climate change.
The notion here is to encourage countries to integrate climate goals into their development planning and to allow policies to be tailored to specific national circumstances—in much the same way that California has tailored policies such as trading, greenhouse gas reporting, and support for biofuels to this state’s unique objectives and needs.
The major resistance to action on this issue, although much diminished, still resides in the same places where it has always been—places where people feel that their profits or their livelihood or their political support will somehow be threatened by the kinds of changes I have talked about today.

These types of models are typically run for large time scales and as the name implies, the results generally cover the entire globe.
The most notable model of this type is the Climate System Model (CSM) model being developed and run at the Climate Global Dynamics (CGD) division of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado.

OSLO (Reuters) - A U.N. panel on climate change is set to give its strongest warning yet that human use of fossil fuels is stoking global warming, informed sources said on Friday.
A draft of the report by 2,500 scientists says it is "very likely" that human activities are the main cause of warming in the past 50 years, strengthening a conclusion in their last study in 2001 that it was "likely", they said.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will also project less extreme bands than it did in 2001 for temperature and sea level rises in the 21st century, they said.
