Type VII U-boat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The type VIID boats, designed in 1939 and 1940, were a longer version of the VIIC with three banks of five vertical tubes just aft of the conning tower, rather like a modern ballistic missile submarine, except that these tubes ejected mines rather than missiles.
The Type VIIC was an effective fighting machine and was seen almost everywhere U-boats operated, although their range was not as great as that of the larger IX types.
Boats of this type were built throughout the war.

 Type IX U-Boat
Improvements over the Type I included supercharged 9-cylinder diesel engines (replacing the 8-cylinder ones used in the Type Is), the conning tower moved to the centre of the boat for improved stability, greater hull streamlining, thicker pressure hull, two rudders (one behind each prop) and a restructured and more finely balanced interior.
While the Type VII was the design favoured by Dönitz as the prefect compromise between weight and weaponload, it was considered too small to match the above requirements by those who controlled the building programme.
Correspondingly, the larger Type I had not met expectations and was proving a relative failure.

The type was built at various shipyards throughout the war and as a result, no two boats are exactly the same.
The main reason I got it was the laser-cut basswood replaced the entire deck of the boat as well as the conning tower’s deck and had all the holes perfectly drilled out.
It was very hard to find info on whether a particular boat had wood or not- but as I said, added this set due to the pre-drilled holes on deck.

The Working Environment for German Submarine Design in WWII
The design of the Type I a, II a-d, III, III mod., IV, V, VI, VII and IX U-boats was done at the MA in the early 30‘s under a cover project named "Entwicklungsaufgaben auf dem Gebiete des Motoren-Versuchsboot-Wesens", which can be translated to something like "Research on engine-trial vessels".
The U-boats were subdivided into sections, with the Type XXI having 8 sections, the Type XXIII 4 sections and the Type XXVI 8 sections.
The design efforts increased also, but mainly these were confined to variations of the types already in service, the Type VII and Type IX.
