Type XXI U-boat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Type XXI U-boats, also known as the "Elektroboote", were the first submarines designed to operate entirely submerged, rather than as surface ships that could submerge as a temporary, awkward mode of operation.
Type XXIs had much better facilities than previous classes, with a freezer for foodstuffs and minor conveniences for the crew such as a shower and wash basin.
A ninth XXI also saw service after the war: U 2540, which had been scuttled at the end of the war, was raised in 1957 to become the research vessel Wilhelm Bauer of the Bundesmarine.

The Type XXI "U-2511" is one of the models we have bought in from John Darnell of ‘Darnell Models’ of Leavesdon. This twin screw model has been designed to operate on 4 channel radio control and can submerge from stationary, using an air pump system, or in motion, using forward dive speed.
The boats were required to be built quickly so a very high degree of sub assembly of pre-fabricated parts and sections was designed into their construction, in fact the four main units would arrive at the slip to be completed very quickly.

The available Type XXI kits were only in 1/144th scale (by Revell, three kits: "U-Wilhelm Bauer", a Type XXI submarine (a rare kit), and a cut-through kit of Type XXI; all three kits share common parts and a number of errors), and although smaller, I didn't like them and decided to scratchbuild my own.
