Genus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In biology, a genus (plural genera) is a grouping in the classification of living organisms having one or more related and morphologically similar species.
The type genus of a taxon is usually the first genus to be named and described.
For instance, Anura is a genus of plants in the family Asteraceae and the order of frogs; Aotus is the genus of golden peas and night monkeys; Oenanthe is the genus of wheatears and water dropworts, and Prunella is the genus of accentors and self-heal.

Type genus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In zoological nomenclature, a type genus is "The nominal genus that is the name-bearing type of a nominal family-group taxon."
In botanical nomenclature, the phrase "type genus" is used, unofficially, as a term of convenience for the genus that includes the type of a higher ranking taxon.
The name of this higher ranking taxon will be based on the name of this 'type' genus (except in the case of a descriptive name).

 ICZN Code
The stem of the type genus is taken and the case ending of the genitive singular in Latin laguage is deleted.
Type series comprises all type specimens, name-bearing types are holotype (fixed originally), syntypes (all type specimens together), lectotype (fixed subsequently) or neotype (fixed subsequently), other specimens are paratypes (syntypes minus holotype) and paralectotypes (syntypes minus lectotype).
Syntypes (cotypes, types) are either expressedly designated or inferred from non-existence of holotype or lectotype within a type series from before 2000, having either been seen by the author or by the authors of earlier descriptions to which was referred to in the description.

PBIO 450 Lecture Notes -- International Code -- Spring 1998: Names: Typification
If the automatic type is the type of the name that ought to have been adopted, and retaining this type as the type of a later name would cause nomenclature instability, then the superfluous generic name can be conserved with a conserved type.
The type of such a name is, of course, the published illustration; the type of that illustration is the specimen from which it was drawn; that specimen is thus the type of the type of the name, a typotype.
To designate a type of a genus or a subdivision of a genus it is necessary only to mention the species name; it is not necessary to cite the actual specimen or illustration that is the type of the species.

How animals are given scientific names
If the genus name is not the same as the one originally used by the author, then the author’s name is enclosed in brackets.
The author usually labels the specimen as a type but this is not always the case and one has to compare the label of the specimen with the collection information accompanying the description to assess whether a specimen is a type or not.
If the types for a particular species or subspecies name are thought to have been destroyed, one can designate a new type which is called a neotype.

name-bearing type: The type genus, type species, holotype, lectotype, series of syntypes (which, together, form the name-bearing type), neotype, type slide, or hapantotype, that provides the objective standard of reference whereby the application of the name of a taxon can be determined.
If the name-bearing type was captured or collected after being transported by boat, vehicle, aircraft, or other human or mechanical means, the type locality is the place from which it, or its wild progenitor, began its unnatural journey.
type series: The series of specimens that either constitutes the name-bearing type (syntypes) of a nominal species or subspecies or from which the name-bearing type has been or may be designated.

 ICZN Code - Article 29
Names in the genus and species groups which have endings identical with those of the suffixes of family-group names are not affected by this Article.
If the name of a genus is or ends in a Greek word latinized with a change in ending, the stem is that appropriate to the latinized form, as determined in Article 29.3.1.
As a means of avoiding homonymy between a new family-group name and a previously established one, due to the respective type genera having identical stems (as determined by Article 29.3), an author is advised to use the entire name of the type genus of the new family-group taxon as the stem.

The scientific name applied to a family is always a modification of the name of one of the genera; the genus involved is termed the type genus.
The first word is the genus name, and the second word is usually an adjective describing the organism, its geographic location, or the person who discovered it.
