Typeahead - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Typeahead is a feature of computers and software (and typewriters, in days gone by) that enables users to continue typing regardless of program or computer operation - the user may type in whatever speed he desires, and if the receiving software is busy at the time it will be called to handle this later.
Typeahead has its roots in the age of typewriters.
Achieving true typeahead requires maintaining a so-called "typeahead buffer " - a FIFO queue, for instance - whose role it is to store a limited amount of keyboard input until it is called for.

The IBM Selectric typewriter (also known as the IBM Golfball typewriter), first released in 1961, had a typeahead feature designed to smooth out typists' irregular fingerstrokes.
Achieving this requires maintaining a so-called "typeahead buffer " - a FIFO queue, for instance - whose role it is to store keyboard input until it is called for.

Since number of outstanding commands multiplied by player speed is how many ms player is ahead of response then it allows client to have a "typeahead time_limit" parameter which player can set to what works best for them.
Typeahead time_limit is the problem that is being addressed (having commands being processed long after player stopped typing).
When player types new command then that should cause enough of a pause for the new command to be recognized and so no pause.

In those cases, typeahead is considered undesirable, and in the spell-check case zsh wants to leave it available in case the user intended it as input for the command.
The decision made was to treat it like spell checking, leaving the typeahead alone when possible so that other commands may consume it.
The problem this leaves that there's no way to emulate "consume typeahead" from a script (because all other reads are blocking and wait for a newline).

Typeahead only works up to a limit of 240 characters (one packet), and it provides a "convenience" double-echo that many users have found disruptive (Reflection and TypeAhead Engines only echo when the data is actually transferred to the application program, but MPE XL echoes as you type and again later).
Here is a WARNING from the HP manual: No attempt should be made to use typeahead mode at a terminal that is running an application which has not been specifically coded for typeahead processing.
Here is some more discussion from the HP documentation: "By allowing typeahead mode you can make it possible for the user of the application to enter data that the user knows will be required before the application actually requests the data.

Since we only check for typehead after * the output buffer is flushed, 'upc' and the size of the output buffer * determine how often this occurs.
However, you will notice delays in the * screen update if the 'write' actually takes any significant amount of * time to execute (it usually takes none since all it usually does is * write to an operating system buffer).
This absolutely must not read any characters from the * 'tty' if 'leave' is set or typeahead will be lost when the editor exits * or does a shell escape.

Normally, the tty driver buffers typed characters until a newline or carriage return is typed.
Hence, these rou tines provide the same functionality as nodelay, plus the additional capability of being able to block for only delay milliseconds (where delay is positive).
Mixing raw/noraw and cbreak/nocbreak calls leads to tty driver control states that are hard to predict or understand; it is not recommended.

This primitive typeahead feature presents problems in that there is no chance to catch typing mistakes before a command line is sent to STN.
Since STN Express' typeahead does not display, it is useful only for experienced typists or for typing ahead a few lines (preferably simple lines).
Their typeahead is visible as opposed to the invisible typeahead of STN Express and no typeahead of STN Communicator/PCPLOT III.

If the system clobbers typeahead in the way described in Src/Zle/zle_main.c, then the typeahead should get lost before getquery() has a chance to read even the first character.
