  Encyclopedia: Typed link
A typed link in a hypertext system is a link to another document or part of a document that includes information about the character of the link.
Typed links, while not really a part of Internet/HTML based hypertext systems were a common feature in pre-Internet hypertext systems such as Xanadu, NoteCards, HyperWriter, IBIS/gIBIS and others.
While typed links can be very useful, the lack of a standardized set of link attributes such as "Supports Position"/"Refutes Position" as well as the difficulty of applying the attributes has always hindered the use of typed links beyond prototyping purposes.

As to the attribute "insufficient", the limits of typed links are obvious: i) unless a commonly accepted ontology is given for a field, the semantics of a given link type are known to the user but not to the reader.
Links of this type are visualized using a thumbnail picture as in figure 2b.
Links of this type may be visualized using a thumbnail picture or, if there is text after the anchor, the text referenced by the link itself may be displayed (see figure 3a).

December 1999 : XML Based Linking Concept
Linking languages, concepts, and systems should be "enabler" to build powerful individual linking concepts for creating, generating, editing, maintaining the different kinds of links in my information pool and — sometimes — even from my information pool to others.
When variants are used, the editors have to avoid that links point from one variant to another: In the given context, a link stored in a text part belonging only to the print variant must not point to text parts belonging only to the CD ROM variant of the reference work.
In online help systems, multidirectional, typed links are an important issue: When searching for a certain topic in online help systems, all the occurrences of that topic should be listed in order to let the reader choose the subject that is useful in the current situation.

When connecting to an object that also originates a link state advertisement (i.e., another router or a transit network) the Link ID is equal to the neighboring advertisement's Link State ID. This provides the key for looking up said advertisement in the link state database.

 HyperText Design Issues: Topology
However, an advantage is that often, when a link is made between two nodes, it is made in one direction in the mind of its author, but another reader may be more interested in the reverse link.
A compromise that links be one-way in the data model, but that a reverse link is created when any link is made, so long as this can be done without infringing protection.
Link typing helps with the generation of graphical overviews, and with automatic tracing.

 Eastgate: link types
For example, if the computer knows whether a link leads to a citation or a counter-argument, it might be able to make better choices of window size and layout.
For example, an update link directs the reader to information that has been discovered since the work was originally written, but a correction link identifies an error in the work as it originally appeared.
Link types may not capture or express this multivalence, but that is not a unique failing: book titles, chapter headings, dedications, indexes, and indeed writing itself fails to convey all of the multivalence of human feeling and communication.

Links, whether they are browsable hypertext links, or simply a means of capturing a relationship between resources, have many purposes.
Links can support pushbutton printing of a multi-resource document in a prescribed order, jumping to the access control page for a resource, and quick browsing of related information, such as a table Slein, et.
Both annotation and link servers frequently need to store stable references to portions of resources that are not under their direct control.

The links are used to join objects we call “concepts”, which are short pieces of text describing a problem, a piece of experimental data, a hypothesis etc. The resulting triple we call a “claim”; it is in effect the assertion that a particular relationship holds between two concepts.
By contrast, the links from concepts backed by one paper in ClaiMaker to concepts backed by another have both labels (i.e., they are typed citations), from which the motivation can be judged by humans, and computable features such as polarity and weight.
Similarity links are acceptable in either direction because natural similarity is a symmetrical relation: if A is like B, then B is like A. In Figure 2 the principle of this lineage search is illustrated using the model for this paper.

If our statically typed closures can’t lead to code that is runtime type-safe, then what is the advantage of bothering with static declarations.
We might as well stay with the dynamically typed closures that offer the same amount of type safety and are much less complex.
At first glance, statically typed generics look really attractive, but add a great deal of complexity without achieving static type safety for a very common class of problems where closures are commonly used.

From System F to Typed Assembly Language   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
We motivate the design of a statically typed assembly language (TAL) and present a type-preserving translation from System F to TAL.
The TAL we present is based on a conventional RISC assembly language, but its static type system provides support for enforcing high-level language abstractions, such as closures, tuples, and objects, as well as user-defined abstract data types.
The compiler and typed assembly language provide a fully automatic way to produce proof carrying code, suitable for use in systems where untrusted and potentially malicious code must be checked for safety before execution.

High-resolution addressability provides the capability to link to objects that are more granular than a document, such as paragraphs in a textual document, pixels in a bitmapped image, and frames in a video.
Experience suggests that a graph-based data modeling language consisting of nodes and links is the most appropriate way to express knowledge containers for the purpose of hyperdocument applications.
The reason for the separation is that structural links within documents are thought to be different from links that represent relationships between documents, a consequence of our paper-based, document-centric paradigm.
