Typewriter. Who is Typewriter? What is Typewriter? Where is Typewriter? Definition of Typewriter. Meaning of ...
The method by which the typewriter actually marks the paper now varies as greatly as types of printers do, but until the end of the 20th century was by the impact of a metal (or, later, metallized plastic) type element against an "inked" ribbon which caused ink to be deposited on the paper.
The final major development of the typewriter was "electronic" typewriters, most of which replaced the typeball with a daisy wheel mechanism (a disk with the letters molded on the outside edge of the "petals").
Typewriter erasers were equipped with a brush for brushing away eraser crumbs and paper dust, and using the brush properly was an important element of typewriting skill, because if erasure detritus fell into the typewriter, a very small buildup could cause the typebars to jam in their narrow supporting grooves.

Typewriter desk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Typewriter desk is an antique desk form meant to hold a typewriter in an efficient position for the typist.
All of the early typewriter desks were extremely sturdy affairs since the early typewriters were not electric and could be operated only by constant pounding on the keys by the user.
After World War I typewriters gradually became less costly and the typewriter desk was more or less standardised in two forms: One was a small mobile desk incorporating four wheels with brakes, the other was an "L" shaped desk with a "normal" height section for reading and handwriting and a lower section for the typewriter.

The Ergonomic desk of the last decades is the newest addition to a long list of desk forms, but in a way it is only a refinement of the mechanically complex Drawing table or drafting table of the end of the 18th century.
Refinements to those first desk forms were considerable through the 19th century, as steam driven machinery made cheap wood-based paper possible in the last periodes of the first phase of the Industrial revolution.
In a sense, the typical desk is becoming gradually virtual through a combination of the GUI and printouts, and is now expanding in size instead of shrinking, because of the exploitation of cubicle walls and of the theoretically infinite size of the GUI desktop.

In the late 19th and the start of the 20th century a person who operated such a device was sometimes also called a "typewriter," but it then became more common to call the person a "typist." A typewriter has a keyboard, with keys for the characters in its font.
IBM and Remington electric typewriters were the leading models until IBM introduced the IBM Selectric typewriter, which replaced the typebars with a spherical typeball (more correctly, "element"), slightly smaller than a golf ball, with the letters molded on its surface.
Towards the end of the commercial popularity of typewriters in the 1980s, a number of hybrid designs combining features of computer printers and typewriters were introduced.

Many models of mechanical typewriters incorporated a bell, which would warn the typist that they were approaching the edge of the paper and would soon have to start a new line.
The QWERTY layout of typewriter keys became a de facto standard and continues to be used long after the reasons for its adoption have ceased to apply.

The man primarily responsible for developing the first commercially successful typewriter was Christopher Latham Sholes, together with his associates Carlos Glidden and Samuel Soule.
Yet in this portrait, Sholes is shown posing not with the large, heavy Remington desk machine but with a hand-built prototype of a small, lightweight portable typewriter.
In the long run, their fears were justified -- in the 1930s to 1960s it was Smith Corona, Underwood and Royal who largely dominated the typewriter business with portable machines that sold in tens of millions.

Not all that long ago, when a client asked for a designer to create a home office, much of the concern for the way the client functioned revolved around which side of the desk the typewriter return went on.
The wiring/cabling problems were largely limited to the phone, the desk lamp and the electric typewriter.
To further complicate today’s assignment, unlike designing around a typewriter, it is difficult to properly design a home office for today’s computer-user without being thoroughly conversant with the technology as well as the unique day-to-day functional requirements of the computer user.
