Typography - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Typography per se began with introduction of moveable type in mid-15th century Europe, at the junction of the medieval era and the onset of the Renaissance and ensuing Classical Revival.
Typography is a potent element in graphic design where there is less concern for readability and more potential for using type in an artistic manner.
Display typography encompasses posters; book covers; typographic logos and wordmarks; billboards; packaging; on-product typography; calligraphy; graffitti; inscriptional and architectural lettering; poster design and other large scale lettering signage; business communications and promotional collateral; advertising; wordmarks and typographic logos (logotypes), and kinetic typography in motion pictures and television; vending machine displays; online and computer screen displays.

In writing and typography, a ligature occurs where two or more letterforms are written or printed as a unit.
Besides allocating a particular arrangement as a ligature, the relative location of the characters can be altered by kerning, something which has become easier with phototypesetting, and above all, with computer typography.
The fonts for both the Macintosh and Microsoft Windows-based computers include a "dotless 'i'", which (aside from its necessity in printing Turkish) facilitates kerning "fi" and "Ti" instead of using a ligature.
