Typosquatting, also called URL hijacking, is a form of cybersquatting which relies on mistakes such as typographical errors made by Internet users when inputting a website address into a web browser.
As with Cybersquatting in the past, the term Typosquatting has been used by covetous parties in an effort to unseat domain registrants from brandable variants of generic domain names.
As in the preceding example, the dividing line between typosquatting and registering a variant of a generic word or phrase blurs, dependent on individual case and circumstance.

Typosquatting seems like a new trend, although it is something that has been going on for years.
Typosquatting is registering particular domain names which have no purpose other than to pick up traffic from visitors who type in these domain names by accident.
Given the results of previous typosquatting cases, such as arifrance.com and e-bay.nl, that would appear to have been a wise move.
