Tyr : Eric The Red - Review at Harvest Moon Music
Týr have literally come from the middle of nowhere (the Faröe Islands, to be precise) to deliver a genre-crossing album of epic proportions.
A relatively young band with one full-length album already behind them, Týr combine progressive, folk, power, and viking metal elements to create a unique style of folk metal accessible to fans of many styles - doom, fl, and Gothic in addition to those already mentioned.
This is genuinely an album of standout tracks, each with much to set itself apart from those before and after, which of course results in a very interesting listen.

When they returned to action in July 1975 with their sixth album, Sabotage, they were welcomed back at home, but in the U.S. the musical climate had changed, making things more difficult for an album-oriented band with a heavy style, and though the LP reached the Top 20, it did not match previous sales levels.
But the singles did not improve the album's commercial success, which was again modest, and Osbourne left Black Sabbath for a solo career, replaced in June 1979 by former Rainbow singer Ronnie James Dio (b.
The album was a modest commercial success, but the new band began to fragment immediately, with Hughes replaced by singer Ray Gillen for the promotional tour in March 1986.

Tyr was by then regarded as Odin's son (or possibly of the giant Hymir).
Tyr is represented as a man with one hand, because his right hand was bitten off by the gigantic wolf Fenrir (in old-Norse, the wrist was called 'wolf-joint').
Thor and Tyr are indeed two separate deities, and TTBOMK, Thor's cult was the longest surviving after the Christianization of Scandinavia, due in part to the hammer's resemblance to a cross (remind me to show you the Thor's hammer I occasionally wear).

We didn't play abroad in 2005 concentrating all our energy on the third album and to get a deal with a record company and a booking agent, which we knew was crucial to secure the future for the band.
The recording and producing of the album was very straightforward although we knew had very much to do in a short period of time.
We had just failed in finding what we thought was a qualified singer and we recorded this album in a hurry convinced that it had to be done as soon as possible, if only with a mediocre result, so as to keep our musical heads above waters with all the lien-up problems and what not.

First off, the album cover is breathtaking, and immediatley draws you to the cd, being a viking and nordic maniac, i jumped at it.
Admittedly those bands might sound better on the first listen but after that you realise that they are nothing more than souless songs with lyrics without much meaning, and good music added to it, but with little thought for originality or qulality.
Tyr is SO much more, after the first listen you begin to notice many new things, and you become accustomed to their very unique progressive epic edge.

TYR is from the Faroe Islands of Denmark and they use their background in the history of this mysterious-sounding place from which to draw the basis of their music.
The fact that the majority of this album is also sung in the language of the ancient Faroe’s just adds icing to the proverbial cake, as numbers like “Regin Smidur” & “Olavur Riddaroros” indicate, and the cover of the Celtic traditional piece, “The Wild Rover” slides in to fit perfectly like a battle-glove.
It is difficult for me to describe any further just how awesome or original an album this is. To say that it is up with the very best, not only of prog-metal, but of any heavy music at all, of any year, is completely accurate and no exaggeration whatsoever.

For me this album is the most underrated in the entire Sabbath catalogue and remains one of my all time favorites from the band.
This is an odd album for Sabbath and not really at all like anything else they have done, but for me it ranks right up there with "Heaven And Hell", and "Paranoid" as one of their best.
Setting aside the issues of where this album ranks in the Black Sabbath catalog, or how vocalist Tony Martin stacks up against his predecessors, the fact remains that TYR is a criminally underrated yet nearly perfect power metal album.

PyroMusic.net - Review of: Tyr - Eric The Red
Although Tyr can certainly be placed in the metal subgenre, the emphasis on this album is on melody, a trait which you will find in abundance here on outstanding tracks such as "Regin Smidur" and the Irish standard "The Wild Rover." It's this attention to melody that makes the music of Tyr so enjoyable.
With themes steeped in Norse mythology, on might expect Tyr to be in the vein of fl metal, yet their style, although containing distorted guitar — is certainly nothing of the sort.
Instead, Tyr is deeply focused in providing a rock-based sound which often branches out into the realms of progressive metal, yet always retains a classic element about it that remains true to the roots of Scandinavian music.

Tyr is one of those bands that be classified as Viking metal in its truest form.
What sets Ragnarok apart from Eric the Red is that instead of focusing on one man's journey, Ragnarok's concept is based on the idea that even though the fates of the Gods are known in advance, they choose to fight until the end.
Tyr's music reflects that ideal without dumbing down the sound in order to gain new fans.

In fact before I knew of their Faroese origins, I gathered that Tyr are from some part of Northern Europe, as many of their songs are traditional folk songs interpreted in the Faroese language, which is very close to Icelandic.

TYR was one of the albums Black Sabbath made during the years where they found it hard to keep a stable line-up and they constanly had musicians joining and leaving the band.
As you would expect this had a bad effect on the production of their albums and even though TYR is a great album it isn't as good as many of Sabbath's others.
TYR is plagued with the same problem that Headless Cross had during its recording the year before (1989) this problem is a lack of bass.
