[No title]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
The Völsung Cycle is a series of legends in Norse mythology that were first recorded in medieval Iceland.
The original Icelandic tales were greatly expanded with native Scandinavian traditions, such as that of Helgi Hundingsbane, which, in turn, originally appears to have been a separate tradition the Ylfings.
The Völsung Cycle is based on the same subject matter as the Middle High German epic poem Niebelungenlied.

  Tyrfing - Wikipedia
Tyrfing or Tirfing was a magic sword which figures in a poem from the Elder Edda called The Waking of Angantýr, and in Hervarar saga.
The name is also used in the saga to denote the Goths and the form Tervingi was actually recorded by Roman sources in the 4th century.
They were all slain at Samsø, by the Swedish champion Hjalmar, and his Norwegian sworn brother Orvar-Odd; but Hjalmar, being wounded by Tyrfing, has only time to sing his death-song before he dies, and asks Orvar-Odd to bring his body to Ingeborg at Uppsala.

Peter Andreas Munch — Norse Mythology — Part 2
Once while she was playing chess with Gudmund, and had laid Tyrfing aside, one of the men of the retinue drew it from its scabbard to admire its burnished edge; Hervor at once sprang up and drove the sword through his body, inasmuch as the blade demanded the blood of man once it was unsheathed.
With these words he drew Tyrfing and was about to cut Odin down; but Odin took the shape of a falcon, and the sword struck only his tail, from which it shore off a part; this is the reason why the falcon has a stubbed tail.
Aslaug is not mentioned at all in the Eddie poems; and the report that she was the daughter of Sigurd Fafnirsbane is directly contradicted by the account given in the Eddic poems of the relations between Sigurd and Brynhild.

Then, she also summoned her eleven uncles and she did so with such a lound voice and such harsh words that finally, her father's voice was heard and he asked not to pursue her quest.

The heroic poems of the Edda, on the contrary, with the exception of the Helgi cycle, have very close analogues in the literatures of the other great branches of the Germanic race, and these we are able to compare with the Northern versions.
The remaining poems of the cycle, all late in style and tone, deal with the fates of Gudrun and her brothers, and owe their existence to a narrator's unwillingness to let a favourite story end.
Heroic cycles differ as a rule merely in their choice or combination of incidents, not in the nature of their material.

According to versions H and U, Arngrim went pillaging to Gardariki and met its king Svafrlami, who was in possession of Tyrfing at the moment.
Tyrfing cut through Arngrim's shield and down into the soil, whereupon Arngrim cut off Svafrlami's hand, grabbed the sword and slew him with his own weapon.

The Edda, Vol. 2 The Heroic Mythology of the North, Popular Stud, by Winifred Faraday   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
(a) Weland the Smith.—Anglo-Saxon literature has several references to this cycle, which must have been a very popular one; and there is also a late Continental German version preserved in an Icelandic translation.  But the poem in the Edda is the oldest connected form of the story.
Rydberg formulates a theory identifying Völund with Thiazi, the giant who carried off Idunn.  It is based chiefly on arguments from names and other philological considerations, and gives perhaps undue weight to the authority of Saxo.  It is difficult to see any fundamental likenesses in the stories.
The poems of this cycle are four in number—(1) Hjalmar’s Death-song:  (2) Angantyr and Hervör; (3) Heidrek’s Riddle-Poem:  (4) Angantyr the Younger and Hlod.  All are given in the first volume of the Corpus, with translations.
