 Cardolani Succession: Geography
Feotar is bordered to the north by Tyrn Gorthad and to the south by the Gwathló as it flows from Caras Mindol in the northeast to Tharbad in the southwest.
Dol Tinare is bordered to the north by Tyrn Gorthad, to the west by the Baraduin and to the east by Feotar.
Tyrn Gorthad's lands cover most of the north of Cardolan, running from the Baranduin in the east to the Nen-i-Sûl in the west, a small stream that runs south from Amon Sûl and into the Gwathló.

Cardolan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It soon became apparent that Cardolan could not hold back the forces of Angmar, and in its last years the people became entrenched in their capital region, Tyrn Gorthad (the Barrowdowns).
This position became unholdable after Angmar sent evil spirits to inhabit the downs (the Barrow-wights).
It had to fight the combined armies of both Angmar and Rhudaur.

 Flags and devices of Eriador
After the demise of king Ostoher and his sons in the battle of Tyrn Gorthad (1410), Cardolan was plunged into a period of civil war.
Power-thirsty hîrs of Faerdor, commanding the largest body of feared cardolani Raggers (professional heavy infantry armed with long pikes and swords), conquered Tyrn Gorthad and several other hîrdoms, ruling Cardolan as Canotars for nearly 80 years, until a group of political zealots murdered the last Canotar, Daeron the Bad.
In 1414, Annael of Tyrn Gorthad was recognized as a Canotar (Generalissimus), but his dictatorial reign was short-lived.

 SF-Fandom - Unknown Bree Hobbits?
Angmar did indeed strike against the crossroads themselves by stationing the Barrow-Wights at nearby Tyrn Gorthad, so that region must have received a certain amount of strategic thought and attention and reconnaisance.
The infilitration of evil spirits into the ancient tombs of Tyrn Gothad seems to me to have been done for the purpose of defiling a site revered by the Dunedain rather than for any strategic aim.
It is confusing to me when the barrow-wights first appeared in Tyrn Gorthad.

THE TOLKIEN FORUM - Bombadil's choice of weapons: A coincidence?
I had hoped that this would be a nod to the books due to the commonality of Amon Sul and Tyrn Gorthad in the struggle of the Dunedain against the Witch King, although it looks like that was probably unintentional on the part of the film-makers.
This is mentioned in the Appendix B entry for TA 1409, where the Barrow Downs are referred to as 'Tyrn Gorthad'.
Interestingly, it was probably the tomb of this last prince of Cardolan in which the four Hobbits were later captured.

 Barrow Down
The Barrow Downs (or Tyrn Gorthad) are a series of hills located East of the Shire between the Old Forest and Bree in the mythical land of Middle Earth from J.R.R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.
It is written that the earliest of the downs were made in the First Age (the earliest days of man) when the sites were used for burial grounds.

 Encyclopedia of Arda: Tyrn Gorthad
At the height of the kingdom of Angmar, its lord the Witch-king sent out evil spirits to dwell among the barrows of Tyrn Gorthad, and it became a haunted place, shunned alike by the Men and Hobbits who lived nearby.
The tradition of the Barrow-downs was carried on by the descendants of these early Men, and there is evidence that the burial chambers were used for at least the princes of Cardolan, in whose realm they came to lie many millennia after their first use.

The Barrow-Downs are a field of great barrow-mounds east of the Old Forest, also known as Tyrn Gorthad.
The mounds were first built in the First Age, by the wandering forefathers of the Three Houses of the Edain, and are thus much revered by they Dúnedain, who continued to bury their dead there until the fall of Cardolan in Third Age 1409.

Pelenwen is Hir of Tyrn Gorthad and active in politics, regularly attending the Council of the Sceptre.
He is known to get on well with Pelenwen and Pelendur of Tyrn Gorthad, although Mablung frowns on any such alliances.
Mablung, Hir of Feotar, is widely regarded as an uncooperative, paranoid man who harkens back to the glory days of Feotar and sees everything that anyone else does as a threat to him and his position.

GW Online : The Lord of The Rings : Heralds of Darkness : Who Are the Heralds of Darkness?
Barrow-wights are corrupt and ruined spirits who, leaving the despoiled lands of Rhudaur and Angmar, took up residence in the crumbling tombs and dwellings of Tyrn Gorthad (the Barrow-downs).
From here they ensnare any creatures foolish enough to cross their domain, offering them up as sacrifice to ancient and horrific evils.

By day, the area seems harmless enough – a quiet region of gently rolling plains and grassy mounds topped by ancient standing stones, marking the final resting place of great warriors from ages past.
Turbine has posted a preview of the Barrow-downs area in Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar.
