 History
As settlement moved westward, townships were often formed in frontier areas before there was sufficient population to justify a separate county, so in most areas the oldest subdivisions are townships, antedating even the county government.
Townships were laid out by action of the local justices of the peace sitting as the county court of quarter session, subdividing the county for purposes of road maintenance, administering poor relief, conducting elections and collecting taxes.
Townships were also created by a special act of the General Assembly until this practice was prohibited by the Constitution of 1874.

Townships formed since that time have been Juniata from Greenfield in 1847; Logan from Allegheny and Antis in 1850; Taylor form Huston and North Woodbury in 1855 and Freedom from Juniata in 1857.
TYRONE is one of the youngest boroughs in the County of Blair, being established on July 27, 1857.

Back in 1755 that portion of Southwestern Pennsylvania was in Augusta County, Virginia, and so if you are researching your ancestors and find they are listed as born in Virginia, this is the explanation.
In June of 1780, Pennsylvania and Virginia reached an agreement and a state line was established between the two states that put present-day Fayette County into what was then Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
Tyrone Township was established in Westmoreland County in 1773 before the erection of Fayette County in 1783.

There is a Peter who had lived in Washington Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania around 1800 and it is now determined that he is not directly related to the Clawsons mentioned above even though some of his descendants appeared in other parts of my family tree.
Recently, a tax record was found for Josiah Clawson in Tyrone Township, Cumberland County, for 1763.

The Tyrone Township Supervisors recently voted to eliminate the four dollar road tax for the Altoona School District residents because the Tyrone Area School District, which comprises the other part of Tyrone Township previously eliminated their per capita tax.
All township and state roads are named with road signs that have been installed.
