Tyrrell County is a member of the Albemarle Commission regional council of governments.
In the county the population is spread out with 22.70% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 30.30% from 25 to 44, 22.70% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who are 65 years of age or older.

The county was formed in 1774 from the southeastern part of Halifax County and the western part of Tyrrell County.
Whereas Dobbs County and Tryon County, named for Martin's predecessors Arthur Dobbs and William Tryon, were abolished after American independence, Martin County was neither abolished nor renamed, a fact which has been attributed to the popularity of Alexander Martin, twice governor of the state (1782-1784, 1789-1792).
In the county the population is spread out with 25.50% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 25.00% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who are 65 years of age or older.

The earliest Davenport in Whitley County came from Tyrrell County, North Carolina (from a section that is now in Washington County), where the line can be traced to 1642.
To trace the North Carolina Davenports, I went through all the colonial, state, and county records for Tyrrell, Whitley, Chowan, and Perquimans Counties, and excerpted every mention of a Davenport for the period 1642-1800, with selected records up to 1840.
It is entitled "The Davenport Families of Sevier County, Tennessee, Whitley County, Kentucky, and Tyrrell County, North Carolina." These notes amount to 115 pages, and obviously would be of value to anyone researching their Davenport line(s) in that time and place.

Columbia is situated in northeastern North Carolina along the Scuppernong River which empties into the beautiful Albermarle Sound.
Several years of additional research and writing hundreds of letters was required in order to finally construct a family tree from Peter Brickhouse who moved to Tyrrell County, North Carolina in December, 1755 down to me. That is where I found myself up against a wall or should I say a “Brick” wall.
The 1860 federal census also attest to the Quaker influence for on this last census prior to the Civil War there were 963 free Negro residents of Northampton County, many of who had received their freedom as a result of the legacy left by the Quaker community of Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
