Entrance to the museum, now known as the Tyseley Locomotive Works & Visitor Centre (and formerly known as the Birmingham Railway Museum) is at weekends only, although some stock (though usually not the shunters) can be seen from the car-park.

 tyseley
Tyseley depot began its life as an operational steam depot in July 1908, and replaced an earlier and smaller shed located at Bordesley closer to the centre of Birmingham.
Tyseley’s existence owed a lot to the opening of the North Warwick Line (also in 1908) which gave a more direct route between Tyseley South Junction and Bearley leading on to Stratford, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bristol, South Wales and the West Country.
So it looked as though the Tyseley engines would be incarcerated in their shed, or at best allowed to stretch their legs on bits of the remaining steam loco yard if BR so had the mind to do.

After the May 1995 Gala, K1 was moved to Tyseley Locomotive Works in Birmingham, and completely stripped down for overhaul, almost certainly for the first time since it was built.
The original idea was that Tyseley would overhaul the boiler on a commercial basis, while the K1 Group tackled the rest of the loco.
During the time at Tyseley a great deal of work was done on the many individual components, as well as cataloguing the items needed to complete the loco - a major task for such a complex piece of machinery.

As a result of a fire in the ticket office area (which is also the platform overbridge) around March 2001, Tyseley was not looking its best when we visited, but it still had most of its old-fashioned Great Western Railway charm with a comfort factor (like large canopied areas) that many modern stations lack.
You might manage street parking a short walk away, but a lift is unlikely even after the renovations because of the tight access at road level, and Wharfdale Road itself is somewhat difficult, with only a tiny drop-off point in front of the station entrance.
