		And the majority of the Tyvan population identify themselves as native speakers of Tyvan (64% in 1989) (Martan-ool 2000: 486), a Turkic language forming part of the Altai-Sayan group of Turkic languages.
		According to this model the central criterion of language vitality is the rate of intergenerational transmission of the home-based language.
		Preliminary results indicate that although Tyvan is widely used among urban Tyvans, assimilation has occurred (and is continuing) among significant percent of urban youth born and raised in Kyzyl.

		The language borrows a great number of roots from the Mongolian language and more recently from the Russian language.
		There are small diaspora groups of Tuvans that speak distinct dialects of Tuvan in the People's Republic of China and in Mongolia.

		Language boundaries must be corroborated by the more commonly cited criterion of mutual intelligibility to the extent that dialects of a single language must be mutually intelligible, but, obviously, there should be no requirement of total mutual unintelligibility between closely related languages.

	Okinsky Tuvan National Rayon
		The primary spoken language among all is Buryat and schools are bilingual Buryat-Russian.
		The Tofa language is moribund, and as far as Tofa language teaching materials go, there is only a small children's dictionary, a sketchy Russian-Tofa dictionary, and a children's reader in the Tofa language, all of which we (our project team) have.
		From a purely logistical standpoint, Tyvan would probably be the best choice if they want to start teaching it in schools, because of the availability of materials and a long-standing tradition of teaching it in schools.

		Typically, in the language shift situation a dominant language is acquired perfectly, while the minority language is used less and less and is gradually forgotten: its vocabulary decreases, and the speakers have to insert into their speech words and phrases from the dominant language.

		Firstly, it may be that the language of the terminal generation of speakers, that is, those speakers whose younger relatives have no command of their ancestral language, is not markedly different from the language of earlier generations.

	Reindeer Herders Field Report [ASLEP] (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-02)
		The total number of domesticated reindeer in the Republic of Tyva, which had dropped from about 14,000 in 1980 to 3,000 in 1998, has since dropped to approximately 1,000, dangerously close to levels at which the herd will no longer be genetically viable due to inbreeding.
		My dissertation research examines the conditions under which Tyvan reindeer pastoralism as a mode of production and as a way of life is being pushed to the brink of extinction; analyzes the herders' responses to this predicament; and explores the implications of this information for the future of reindeer herding in Tyva.
		I am also ascertaining and analyzing the new institutional arrangements that are forming in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union and its hegemonic and monolithic institutional framework.

		Verbal interrogatives in fact seem to be embarrassingly frequent (particularly around the Pacific rim by some odd coincidence.) Here are the cases sent in: John Koontz: Typical Siouan languages have a verb 'to say what/something'.
		The Siberian Turkic language Tuvan (Tyvan) is one such language.
		Both South Munda and North Munda, Austroasiatic languages of east-central India (Orissa, Bihar) possess interrogatives used verbally 'to what, to how' etc. The list is long enough to make me feel rather naive.
